Need Alternative to Camco Water Bandit

This past weekend we camped at Stony Fork Campground in Virginia and found that none of the water connections there had any screws on them to hook our water hoses to.

I feel like this is really strange, but maybe its more normal than i think.

I tried to use my Camco 22484 Water Bandit but it kept popping off. On my camper, there is no gravity fed port to insert a hose into to fill. You have to screw a hose into it and have some sort of pressure behind it.

After 40 minutes of trying to hold the water bandit on and being soaking wet, it was late so I gave up. We ended up with a 1/3 of tank of water (50 gal max). Which for 4 adults and 2 kids didn't last too long. The next night I got out the only solution i could think of and hand carried over 5 gal water jugs and used my spare water pump to pump it into my fresh water.

When campground don't have a faucet with the screws to attach a hose, what do you use?

Could you put a hose clamp on the rubber end of the water bandit to hold it on?

I was actually just thinking of that. And I probably had one big enough to fit at the time.

That's too weird. Never been to such a campground.

I'd carry 1" hose clamps........about a buck each. Try that.

Yeah it was a bit strange. We just moved from Indiana to NC about 3 months ago and this was our first outing in VA. Even the Potable water at the filling station looked like a copper pipe that was slightly bent and cut off at the end.

Only one park in IN that we had been to didn't have faucets with threads.

You have me thinking. I camp about 70 days a year. But every hose I have is threaded. I have never even thought of that "Water bandit" thing.

I guess it's one more thing to put on my Amazon wish list. Geez........... I already have several 1" hose clamps.

1 well placed Ty-Rap probably would have worked if you didn't have a hose clamp...

It seems like NYS campgrounds (without water hookups) love this type of water spigot so I made my own using a brass fitting, tubing & hose clamps.

One end is a male garden hose thread and the other is barbed (like these ...
https://www.amazon.com/Tubing-Fittin...T9QF72FZ86N4WV) to go on a piece of tubing with a hose clamp. The tubing is ~8" long with another hose clamp to cinch it to the spigot with a nut driver. I have 3 or 4 different sized tubing ("small" to "large") and have used them all since it seems like no spigot is the same. In fact, I ran into one last year that was even bigger than my "large" one. I ended up duct taping the tubing onto the spigot ... and the got very wet while filling the tank!

Old hose

Before you discard an old hose just cut off about 6-8 inches of the male end of the hose and it works just like a water thief. Still need a hose clamp to hold it on the campground faucet.

Another alternative is to use your anti-freeze suction line to suck water out of a can and fill your freshwater tank.

Takes two tees, a shutoff valve, a couple of feet of PEX and appropriate clamps. Tee in to the pressure line coming from the water pump and connect the other end to the line that feeds fresh water to the water pump. In use, turn on the AF suction line (which essentially disconnects the FW suction line to the pump), then turn on the line from the main pressure line so the output of the pump is directed in to the FW tank. Easier to do than describe.

I've never been any place I couldn't get water, the problem is getting it in to the RV. Now I carry a couple of plastic 5 gal cans in the basement and can easily transfer them to the FW tank.

And, yes, there is a trick that will extend your black/grey tankage, too, but I'm not going there.

I have seen Very few Fresh Water hoses that will expand over a hydrant end! Water Bandit has several internal Diameters and the Rubber will stretch over the hydrant end! Youroo!!

Shanks 12,are you saying that Every Site Hydrant had No Threaded end or the Common use Hydrants had No Threaded end?? I would think that Every Site being "Threadless" that the Plumbing Code which Requires a "Anti-Syphon Device on the Hydrants" was "Misinterpreted"! Youroo!!

The few places I have camped that didn't have a threaded spigot were too large for a cut off garden hose to slip over

Get a male hose mender end ( like to repair a garden hose), a foot of 5/8" clear, thin wall vinyl tubing and a couple screw type hose clamps. Assemble the pieces. I've used it many times for just that purpose. The vinyl tubing will stretch a fair amount and go over the faucet end and whatever else you need that fits that i.d.

Sounds like a stop at the local Wally World is needed for 1 or 2 of those collapsible 5 gal. jugs which won't take up much room and are light weight.
Adapt a length of plastic tubing to assist with getting water into the fill port.

I think a hose clamp of dorts came with my water thief. Has a big thumb screw type knob to tighten by hand.

That's the problem. This guy has a hose fitting with a check valve at
the fill port. This makes filling with a funnel or by gravity nearly impossible!
I'm glad mine is the old fashioned gravity fill and I can use a hose stuffed in there or a funnel if absolutely necessary.

youroo, California state park campgrounds rarely have any hookups.
So water is only available at a faucet, every 6-8 campsites.
NONE of the faucets are threaded. They have a tapered spout that makes even a Water Bandit difficult to use.

There's another reason why I don't go to California ...
