Penetrating Oils
Thought this was interesting
Penetrating Oils
Machinist's Workshop MagT recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts.
They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
*Penetrating oils .......... Average torque load to loosen*
No Oil used .................. 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..............127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix............53 pounds
The ATF-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results.
Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.
Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50-50 mix. *ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid

Some of you - especially those who have worked in aviation maintenance may remember MEK. That stuff was great for cleaning parts.
It has been banned for many years now - wish I still had some.

You may be dating yourself on this post cause I don't think I ever remember seeing MEK.

Well in your defense - the fumes from using it were quite strong - so I can understand your not remembering seeing it, so I will give that to you.
I don't mind dating myself - I have had a good life so far so as far as I am concerned, each new day is just gravy.

Methyl ethyl ketone. Almost as good smelling as diesel in the morning.
My ol man swore by liquid wrench and 3 in 1 oil. Ah, the good old days.

That's the stuff! You couldn't let it stay on your hands very long when using it - sure did dry your skin fast.

Another solvent we used back in the 70's was 1,1,1-Trichloroethane or Chlorothane. Stuff would clean anything organic, especially oils and grease. It would also clean you. Would take the oil right out of your skin leaving a white powder on you. Probably was one of the better things outlawed.

I remember that also. All that stuff was great, but our Uncle Sam decided it wasn't good for us to use it.
You used it " back in the 70"s" Maybe I am not dating myself as much as i have been accused of doing by some other forum member - not mentioning any names.

Used MEK in the 80's to clean black ink out of Videojet and Marsh inkjet industrial printers after the print heads dried up and got clogged. Hands turn white if you didn't wear rubber gloves. Then they itched for hours. NASTY stuff, but man it worked soooo well. MEK got outlawed, so then we used Acetone. Like that was any safer. LOL!

Has anybody seen the new stuff from Loctite? It's called freeze and release. It supposed to freeze the nut or bolt to -40f and in doing so it has penetrating oil in the spray and its supposed to wick it in during the freeze to loosen things up. I've been looking for it, I'm interested in trying it out.

I looked it on the Amazon site. There were 3 reviews - 1 good and 2 so and so.
Amazon is offering a 13.52 fl oz spray can for $9.99.

So much for PB Blaster being #1.
I have tried it, and must admit that it is nothing special.

Chemsearch has a product called Shield. I use it on injection mold inserts that have had water lines break and have rusted together. It seems to do quite well, as the tolerances on these parts are extremely tight. Nothing else I've tried seems to work as well.

Careful
Careful, with this stuff. WD-40 was formulated to have a high flash point, low volatility, similar to safety solvent in parts washers. Acetone go BOOM pretty easily and can hurt yer liver ( I'd rather save my liver for beer processing).
MEK is even more volatile AND dangerous.
Just saying, if you use this concoction, please be careful, be well ventilated and wear an organic vapor respirator if necessary.
