Rain and wind bring your awnings in!

This is why you bring your Awning in when it’s going to storm or winds are going to be gusty. A neighboring camp site is going to have a surprise when they return. We had high winds 40+ and thunderstorm warnings with tornadoes about 45 miles away.

Couldn't agree more.
I've done exactly what you do since wife and I started camping in 1992 and have never had an issue.

Sometimes people just "forget" to run it in when they leave.

Ok so there is more that happed so let the show begin lol. So in their defense they were college age kids [emoji23]. So the list continues with these guys. They had a water leak and turns out they never put the anode rod back in the water heater so that was entertaining to watch them figure that out. They also after the wind and rain issue with the awning they tried to start a fire. We watched for 2 hours and still no fire. We even offered them dry wood and fire starters but they refused the help. Needless to say we had some good laughs that day/night 🤣🤣

The Internet.

Someone posted that they always leave their awnings out and have never had a problem.

We all have that is for sure. The first mistake I did was leave the antenna up while driving down the interstate. Took me a while to figure out what the funny looks were and why people were pointing [emoji16]. No damage but the TT was about a week old and I was starting out good [emoji106][emoji23]

we really lucked out on this once. We were in the So Cal desert for a race, my son was racing as were other members of our M.C. It was early fall so VERY hot. We had the awning out, it was DEAD calm all day. We're at the finish line waiting on my son and look across the valley to where our camp is and a dust devil is building and traveling right toward our rig, could not get there in time so just told the DW, "well there goes our awning, hope it doesn't damage the trailer or someone gets hurt". Luckily there were a few people at camp and I had the awning staked down. When it hit our camp two people ran over and grabbed the uprights, lifted one skinny guy clear off the ground! But the combination of my tie downs, and their quick thinking saved it. On the old manual awnings the stretcher beams at the top collapse, allowing the awning to billow up like a sail, it flaps until it tears or pulls the beams apart, then its history.

With the advent of power awnings, no excuse not to.

Just a quick gust blast and your awning can be rags. We always take ours in when we are away from camp, always look at incoming weather and wind conditions for nighttime. Sometimes pull in awning at night so we don't have any wind surprises at 3am.
Tie downs are nice in a mild wind when you're there to keep it from flapping too much.

One neighbor camper swore and believed in the tent pole tie downs for the outside corners... And they worked.
It was a very windy afternoon in North Georgia and some unusual strong gusts camp up. The poles and tie downs worked great, but that gust got under the awning and ripped that awning right off his camper! It was like tearing a piece of wax paper off the roll dispenser, just that quick. Polls were laying there with awning still attached.

And because they read it on the internet, it must be true.

Regardless, that was an old type manual awning so the wind factor must have been more than a breeze. Either type, common sense HAS to come into play.

We've almost lost ours on calm days while we were sitting under it. Would never chance leaving it. Those winds will come out of nowhere sometimes.
