Stopped THE BOUNCE!

Tried all the usual ways of stopping trl bounce when walking inside. Have wheel chock locks, and strong arm bars on the rear jacks. Trl still has the suspension bounce when someone walks around inside. Got to looking at the 6 point level sys on 5th wheels and saw that they position 4 of the jacks right infront and behind the trl axles. SOOOOO I went to the local junk yard and got 2 scissor jacks out of Ford Windstar vans. The jacks have a jacking plate that fits around the steel plate that's welded to the trl frame between the axles. Run the scissor jacks up tight and then just a bit more to take the load off the trlr axle suspension - NO MORE suspension bounce. DW"S VERY HAPPY NOW!!!!!

Looks and sounds very good and if the solution seems to be even applied by dunnnc it is something to do next year. :-)

prairiecamper, The Windstar jacks had a jacking plate that wit over a metal ridge un the underside of the van, the cap in the jack plate to fit over this ridge was just wide enough to also fit over the metal plate that is welded to the trl frame right between the wheels, thus providing a more stabel jack point. Dunnnc, I'd thought of also permanently mounting mine someway centered between the 2 axles, but was afraid that in the event of a blow out the jack would be ripped away and who knows what it might take with it. Guess I'll just stick with putting them between the axles when I get to the campsite.

I started using the scissor jack method this year. Makes a tremendous difference.

I have a spare set of stab jacks that I use in front of the axles and it makes a larger difference in bounce. One of these days I might get around to mounting them, but for now they are easy enough to throw back in the basement when we are leaving.

Now if you want to take the bounce out while on the road, you need to add shocks.

It does make a tremendous difference in how the trailer rides and tows.

This is my 2nd Rockwood, and as yet have not really noticed any real bounce issue with the torq flex axles. Who knows might be only way to tell any difference is to install shocks. Any spring project OLD COOT? Like shocks on my trl????

Thanks OLDCOOT, but until I see that there is and issue with road bounce with my little 2604, I'll just keep keeping on as is. Towed over some really rough back roads and haven't seen any issues yet.

lindy,
OLDCOOT is right about the shocks. I will also agree that you may not THINK that you need shocks but as the TT moves down the road hitting bumps/dips the tires will bounce. Even the slightest bounce will affect tire wear and handling. Any type of spring: coil, torsion, or leaf will oscillate until the energy of motion is either dampened or it dissipates. It is preferable that the energy is dampened and a shock will convert that motion into heat. We just got our Flagstaff with the Tor-Flex axles. I've contacted Dexter asking about installing shocks on the Tor-Flex axles. They told me that Airstream puts shocks on some of their units. I'll be designing mounts and installing this spring.
Dunnec has already done this and maybe Oldcoot has as well. Just some food for thought.

Other than the cost, is there any reason why 2-pairs of Lippert's Electric Stabilizing Jacks couldn't be used for this? clicky
