a mixture of 1/2 icing sugar and 1/2 baking soda. The ants take the mixture back to the nest and will kill all the ants. The baking soda will cause the ants to develop gas and die. The mixture will not harm children or pets. This was developed by a student for a science project.
Just don't flick yer Bic near the ant bed!

Having fought ants numerous times --- and careful to not use pesticides --- I carry corn meal. When sprinkled around, ants can be controlled in a harmless manner.
Does anyone have other ideas?
I normally use cinnamon. Almost always have that for my peach cobbler. I sprinkle it around and does fairly well to keep ants away.
