I just leave mine attached to the hose. All fresh water parts, hoses, pressure regulator, elbows, filters, splitters go into a single garbage bag.
Works for me.

If it's a mounted inline don't worry about it. if it's external on the house, put the original caps on it or put it is a baggie.

if you read about the problems some have had with filter holder breaking and flooding the camper, you would eliminate the inboard filter (and it's expensive cartridge) and go for something that is outside of the camper. just hook the inlet hose to the outlet to bypass the filter...
use something like this Camco filter from amazon...
place it int the water input line outside the trailer...

You’ve never had a mold or foul water issue? I read somewhere about storing the filter in refrigerator. And this is the hose type.

Interesting thought on bacteria growth - I never thought of that. However, doesn't bacteria need light to grow? There's no light getting into the filter. Ours has always been stored with caps on in the Rubbermaid tub with the hose and I've never seen evidence of anything growing in it.

I put the caps back on it and stick it in the fridge. Not comfortable with it sitting in a compartment while not in use warming up to possibly 100 plus degrees.

Larry, algae needs light. Bacteria loves dark. Just think of an old stinky pair of tennis shoes. No light, no problem! Let the stink thrive!

What kind of filter are we talking about here? The Camco blue torpedo or the 10 inch long "whole house" type filter cartridge that goes in a housing like the OEM filters that FR tends to install?
I have the latter that I use in an external housing setup. I drain the housing when we're packing up and put it (with filter inside) in the pass through storage. When we get back home to where I store the trailer, I take out the wet filter and leave it in the bathroom sink to dry out through evaporation. I've never given any thought to storing it any other way and the distributor said that's perfectly fine for the filter I'm using. They said I can't leave it too long in stagnant water. If I took it home I guarantee that I'd forget it when going to pick up the trailer for the next trip.

I use the blue torpedo filter when filling my FW tank and a Britta pitcher filter for drinking water. Both filters go in a zip lock bag and into the home fridge in between uses. I change them out every spring.

I store my “in the trailer filter” by removing it and storing it in a plastic canister containing dilute bleach solution. I rinse it off before installing it. I have stored one over the entire winter this way.

Depending on your filter:
Copied from RVwaterfilterstore.com
https://www.rvwaterfilterstore.com/P...2018-v5PDF.pdf
Quote:
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF YOUR FILTERS
1. Sediment and Modified Carbon Block filters – RV SED1/5, PR-1/5, F1/F1PB/F5,
a. These filters are naturally resistant to stagnation, so they are easy to care for. If you use your system regularly,
with no more than a month between uses, you can leave them in water in the canister. If you will not be using the
system for more than a month, then you should dump the water out of the canister and dry the filters. You can
put them back into the dry canister so they can be ready for next use. DO NOT ALLOW TO FREEZE. If the weather
will be freezing, put them in a dust free environment like a closet in a freezer bag.
2. CBC-KDF
a. This filter must be kept in water for it’s entire life. Drying it may result in the filter seizing up and not passing water
3. Resin Filters
a. These can be dried and reused, but you should take care to shake them to loosen up any clumps as they dry so
they can be reused next time. Again, they should be removed if the system will be unused for more than 1 month
4. GAC and CBC-10 carbon block
a. These filters have a higher tendency for stagnation, so they should be dried if left for more than 2 weeks vs a
month for the Sediment and Modified Carbon Block
5. Ceramic filters
a. These can be cleaned with a 3M scotch bright pad or the brush that the filter comes with in the case of the
Doulton RIO 2000. Rub the ceramic surface to remove the sediment and rinse. These filters can remain in water
indefinitely as long as they DO NOT FREEZE as they are bacteriostatic
6. KDF/GAC
a. Any filter with granulated carbon and KDF can be left in water or dried out like a resin filter. The KDF will prevent
bacteria growth so no need to remove these from the canister. If you do take them out, see 3 above for resin filter
for storage.
|
I have the CBC-KDF refill kit. sed1 comes out to dry and cbc-kdf stays in the canister filled with water in between uses.

Have an external canister and empty it and store in refrigerator till next trip. When I hook it up flush it for a minute, put into service. At the end of the season I chuck the filter, wash the canister, dry it and leave on counter till next season. Beginning of season I sanitize canister, (bleach it then fill the main tank, flush main tank thru housing) new filter goes in and flush it for a few minutes then fill 10 to 15 gal thru it into tank and ready for season.
