You are where I was in February. I had a 2500 and wanted a fifth wheel. I spent days discussing GAVWR, CVWR, Front axles, back axles, need to weigh the truck.........and I'm a math guy. I was lost. Finally someone asked what my payload was. I looked on truck and it was 2,283. The pin weight of trailer I wanted was 2,407 dry. Probably 2,800 full. THAT I finally understood. Just the pin, not counting me, DW, fuel, cargo, hitch, etc, blew my payload up.

So I got a dually.

Now, I sort of disregard all the G's and VWR's and whatnot, and figure it this truck won't pull it, to heck with it.

My ole truck is a 2005 Ram 2500 4x4 4dr 6spd. man SB diesel... I have 4:10 gears
According to the Dodge Towing Guide, these are the specs for a 2005 Ram 2500 diesel w/manual transmission:

With 4.10 Axle Ratio Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 12900 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 9000 lbs
Payload [i] = 2042 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 6958 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 4318 lbs/4318 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear [i] = 5200 lbs/6000 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 20000 lbs

I checked online & it appears the 2013 Open RANGE 427bhs is about 12k dry, 14+ loaded, just like the OP stated... IMO, with just a single driver the OP could use his current 3/4 diesel TV to tow this empty 5er home. However, once family & gear are on-board, he will be over his legal weights. And, in our ambulance-chasing lawyer society & would not purposefully run over sticker weights for too many trips...

If that is your yellow tag that has a 2043 payload here is the max weight 5er you can tow if you just one driver of 200lbs and hitch at 250 and nothing else in the truck.

You're adding approximately 450 lbs. to the truck. You have 1,593 lbs. of payload capacity. Fifth wheels typically have 20% - 25% pin weight which gives you a maximum loaded camper weight of 6,372 - 7,965 lbs.

You almost always run of payload long before you run at towing capacity when you are working with 5th wheels. TT only about 10% to 15% is payload so you can tow a lot heavier TT then a 5er.

Here is a link to the numbers and you can play with them yourself.

My lowly 2011 Ram 2500 CC ST w/5.7 Hemi has a payload of 3,000... However, once you upgrade to the heavier Cummins TD, upgraded interior, etc. the payload drops considerably. Therefore when you upgrade to a diesel you should ALWAYS upgrade to a 1 ton so you can maximize the potential of the diesel...

They really aren't lying to you if they are talking TT. Here is the same numbers run with 200 lbs driver and 100 lbs TT hitch.

You're adding approximately 300 lbs. to the truck. You have 1,743 lbs. of payload capacity. Travel trailers typically have 10% - 15% tongue weight which gives you a maximum loaded camper weight of 11,620 - 17,430 lbs.

Just not a 5th wheel!

Good idea and well said. I guess I either trade trucks...ain't gonna happen now or I get a lite 5er or a TT. Just about sums it up.

Thanks to all for the input.
