Winter Storage: Cover or Not Cover???

So, even though Spring is upon us, had an interesting discussion with neighbors at our RV park. The question was: Should one cover their RV during the winter or leave it exposed. Our units are stored on our sites (we're seasonals) and the responses are 50/50. Some say yes to prevent damage and keep the exterior clean while others say no due to mildew and mold issues. Looking to see what those on our FR forums have to say. Many thanks.

A cover that is designed to be an rv cover (i.e. not a blue tarp) is breathable and you should not have any mold or mildew issues. I cover mine to protect it from the sun - but if the wind can cause the cover to flap you can have the cover rubbing on the finish. I've never had an issue with that, but I am convinced the cover gives mice an easier time getting in the rig to find a nice place to spend the winter. That would be my main argument against covering. We store the trailer in the yard where I keep an eye on the inside for critters. I've had good luck keeping the trailer clean and looking good ever spring after covering, but there are strong opinions both ways on this topic.

The main purpose of the cover is to keep water from damaging your roof. Water expands when it freezes and will crack sealant and crevices letting water into your unit upon the next rainfall. A lot of damage can be done in 5 months while your unit sits over the winter.
