Appliances going out

A person I talked to on the phone last night about his 2005 forest river pup said the refrigerator only works on gas. He said the orginal one worked for a few years and then quit working. The dealer told him they only last a few years. Well he had a new one installed and it too quit working on electric after a couple of years. Is this something typical to campers that we expect to drop $700 every few years on a new refrigerator?

Needs a new dealer, IMO. Most fridge fixes are very inexpensive. Even replacing the cooling coils is not a bank buster.

So this is not a normal thing to have the refrigerator quit working every couple of years?

Sounds like there may be a short somewhere in the camper that is killing the refrigerator.

We had our other camper 10 years and never had a problem with it. I agree with Herk that most repairs are inexpensive. Not sure the dealer is being honest with you-might want to take it to someone else and get an opinion.

Ohhhh this isn't my camper. We were considering purchasing it. I think we will keep looking.

Bummer that you are in Ohio. DW and I were talking of selling our HW277 and getting a Roo. Too windy in our area for us to "enjoy" our PUP. Never fails that we get at least one day of 40+ mph winds every trip.

Fridge coil burn outs are caused by using the fridge "not level."

The ammonia pools in the coils and does not run back down into the reservoir.

Without the ammonia in the reservoir, the flame will burn a hole in the heating chamber and let the ammonia out. You can see the yellow corrosion from the leaking ammonia in this photo.

whoever this guy is selling the popup, seems to be kind of clueless.

nearly all popups i've ever seen, have 3-way fridges. 110vAC, propane and 12vDC.
it's like asking if dorm fridges go out, they're that basic almost.

doesn't sound like the owner is knowledgeable and probably didn't take good care of it.

if you don't mind me asking, why don't you buy a new one, since you live next door to the RV industry's main manufacturing area.
should be lots of great prices on new ones in your area, since they don't have to ship them to other areas of the country.
