Awning Question

I trying to see if its possable to use a roll out awning on a pop up? I have a High Wall pup and we put ythe awning out but if it starts getting really windy we like to put the awning back so it done get damaged. but we cant roll it back up and pout it in the bag do to weight and height so im thinking there might be something out there that can help seeing i cant climb a ladder do to disability and the dw cant hold the bag awning and put the awning in the bag. the pup is a high wall so it migfht have the side wall height when down to mount the bars of a roll out type. even a patio style maybe?

kinma, i'll be interested to see what the answers to your question are. we have the same concern too. I bring a 4' step ladder with me, but hate to get up at 2:30 or so in the morning when a wind storm comes up to roll up the awning.

I'm thinking something will work Hilo travel trailer use roll out awning. I've looked at hilos online and it looks like they use brackets from the upper portion. I would even like to see if a house style would be better that way the roll out portion stays on the roof and just the standings legs extend.

Check out the site below. These are good quality hand cranked awnings that are made for smaller RVs. I had one on a previous trailer and it worked great.

Cameo makes some awning ties that have springs on them. They screw into the ground and straps wrap around the end of the awning. We've had our bag awning up in 30mph winds with no issues.

Just don't put enough tension on them to pull on the roof. I put just enough to keep the straps tight. The wind lifts the awning against the straps and they work perfect.

Our pup truck camper had a crank operated awning. Cannot see why it would not work on a trailer. it was a Palomino that is now owned by FR.

Kinma, we also have looked around for this type of awning as it it almost impossible for us to roll up the awning when we are camping. I am concerned about the weight of any of these, the extra weight on the one side may pull your roof off kilter. I have already suffered a lift cable break from being simply unlevel when lifting the roof....

Gals of Escape so true I was thinking the same thing. Think I might just use a ez up next to the pup. That way it's only a couple hundred not 500+

Our awning attaches to the side of the PUP, so the poles are diagonal rather than vertical, and that way, if it gets Really Bad, we can just lower it. When we had one with vertical poles, even when they were staked, we had it fly over the top of the camper in the middle of the night, which was a ~much~ less pleasant sound than that of rain on the roof. (There was nothing we could do about it, either, until morning, when our fellow campers got a good chuckle out of it before we put it back in position. We like the diagonal attachment much better.)

AshnJim when you attach it to the side do you strap the awning down at all? I would rather attach mine to the side and I can but I was told not to strap it down so I didn't but that's how I had mine attached and it went up n over in a strong wind.

Kinma13, no, we don't strap it down at all. We don't often get very extreme weather - and if it's coming, we usually have an inkling. If it wakes us up, we can hurry out and lower the awning quite quickly. We've never had a problem when it's attached to the side.

What are you doing to lower the awning? We lower a corner but that only allows the rain to shed. I have had my awning flip on to the roof if we don't tie it down, regardless of whether it is attached to the camper side or in the car port configuration so we always tie it down. Our high wall is almost impossible to roll up the awning without lowering the roof. When we were in the Midwest, we never set up the awning, was way too windy.

We just lower both corners when we need to. We usually camp in fairly sheltered areas, woody canyons, where the worst the wind does is blow the campfire smoke wherever we are sitting. Usually it's only when we're in a clear area that there are potential problems with the wind. When we camp around Flagstaff (AZ) where it is almost always windy for the Celtic festivals we attend, we're at the Sunset Crater National Monument's Bonita campground, where it's generally not too bad.

When we had pups and had to roll up the awning we would slide the picnic table over to stand on .

Live n learn, as a micro burst came thru while we were in town.
Also one of the poles poke a hole in the roof that I had to fix..

We have a hw so yes gals of escape it's very high. A table would help but it's just my wife that can get on it due to my disability. We just set it up in carport mode and lower a side or both strap it and pray!
