Brake controller for HW277

It depends on your state- in PA if the GVWR of the trailer is over 3,000 pounds (or thereabouts), it is required.

Actually, what is required is brakes on the camper. If the camper has brakes, you should have a brake controller.

Yes, it has brakes. I know nothing about this. Are you saying if there are brakes, they don't activate without a controller?

Correct. The break controller translates your braking activity in the tow vehicle to the camper.

A brake controller installed into was something like $300 for my Durango for parts and labor. However, my sister who knows people pulled it off for a case of beer.

I don't have my TV yet and was going to borrow my nephews Tacoma. Is it something I can install in his Tacoma and then move to my Grand a Cherokee later? Who installs? RV dealer or car dealer?

My dodge dealer would only install dodge parts. And since the controller I bought was not a dodge one, they declined. So the rv dealer installed it. Was a quick job since the TV was prewired for it.

if the Tacoma and your Jeep both have the factory tow package, both should have the wiring for a brake controller.
suggest a Prodigy BC, the most recommended BC made. you would be able to switch them, though you made need a different plug n play harness for each.

if either don't have the wiring, it'll be a costly install.
you have to have a controller, if the trailer has electric brakes. it's the law.

Thanks. Both would have factory tow package. I think I can do this.

I like the Tekonsha P3, but I've never had a Prodigy, so if the guys say Prodigy, it must be good!

I'm right there with you! I had the same confusion and product installed.

To the OP- I went to a local trailer place and they did all of the work. I was as green as you when I got my pop-up (in 2011). You'll get it- it just takes time.

I have the Prodigy P2 on mine and it has been a good controller. My Pilot didn't have the wiring harness so I had to wire it in myself, but got it all in, but if you are buying a new Jeep you should be good to just plug in and mount your controller. I am sure if you are a member in the Jeep forum they have some threads on it.

If you are picking it up with the Tacoma you will have to buy a wiring kit for the Tacoma and then one for your Jeep. How far is the dealer from where you live? Maybe work it in with the deal to just have the dealer just deliver it to your house?

I have a 2001 jeep and it came with the tow package. I just had to plug in connector and mount the controller. I think it's in your manual some where it's been years. when I bought my F250 I just unplugged it and re plugged it in the F250. Some times you have to buy an adapter, your car dealership parts can tell you.

The P2 and P3 are both very good proportional controllers and there isn't much difference between the P2 and P3. In fact, they are very similar in actual function and are both capable of controlling electric and electric over hydraulic trailer braking systems and the same number of axles. The P3 offers a better display (words vs codes) and more diagnostics than the P2.

Thanks everyone. I think I have it figured out with all your help and a few emails. The guy at e.trailers was helpful and gave me the part number for both vehicles. Yes, the P2 works on both, just have to buy an extra $15 connector when I get the Jeep later.
