If in Canada, Princess Auto have 50' Rv extention cords with lighted ends on sale for $79.99 this week.

You need to use the same amp cord that your camper is rated for. If you use a 20 amp extension cord on a 30 amp service with the adapter and then kick on your a/c and refrigarator you will eventually melt your adapter and cord. they have amp ratings for a reason. I learned this the hard way.

That's why I was saying not to get a light duty cord. I have a 10 gauge cord with 20A ends. When I have had to use it I had no problems.

We paid $99.00 for a 50' 30 amp cord at our RV dealer, I thought thaa was quite reasonable.

Do you all use a cord with a standard 15A connector and a 15A/30A adapter or are your cords fitted with 30amp plug ends?

I only have one but if I wanted 50 feet I'd still go with
2 25s because it's gonna be rare to need a 50 on top
of the 25 that comes with most RVs. (I haven't needed
50 extra yet but have used the 25 several times.)

I normally carry just the 25 foot extension cord, but I camp at 3 locations where I need much longer runs (2 friend's farms and a FAMCAMP spot we love at Quantico Marine Base in VA). I made up a 30 amp 100 foot cord for those trips. Lowes and Home Depot carries the rubberized 30 amp wire and I ordered the yellow "ends with handles" online. You must be careful with power usage, with the Franks autotransformer at the camper to keep the voltage at 110-120, you can pull more amps from the pedestal than the breaker there can handle if you run the AC at the same time as any other high draw item.

two 25's - that's a good idea.

So, i see that the cord linked to has 30amp plugs.

The reason I was asking is that I have a 10/3 but with the 15amp plug. Are there any loss of voltage or problems that could occur from using a 15A/30A adapter?

You are going to lose voltage due to resistance at every brass to brass connection. You will have a connection at the camper wall; the end of the shore cord, the end of the first 25, and the end of the second 25 at the pedestal in addition to voltage loss in the 75 foot run of wire.

Hooking and unhooking while under load burns the tips and blades and increases the voltage drop so always kill the breaker before connecting to the pedestal.

If you monitor your AC you will find the more cord you use the greater the need for an autotransformer.

I think I will just end up having my dad make me a custom length cord.
This way, I am guaranteed good quality.

You are gonna let him make it so you can save on the price of the cord and ends - If he makes it to be a really good quality cord you wont be able to carry it then

Just to clarify: the cord I purchased from Wal-Mart was a 30 AMP RV Extension cord. The problem was the connections in the female plug on the cord. They are not made of heavy enough material to provide enough spring tension on the blades of the male plug. The poor connection causes an increase in amperage over the small/ weak area of contact, increasing heat, hence burning the plug. I never "Hot Plug" my connections. I always make sure the breaker is off. Have burned male plug blades at CGs due to loose/ worn plugs. I have cut off the molded plg from my main cord and use a Camco plug. I keep a spare in the TT. If I burn a plug now, I just replace it before the next trip. Don't go and buy the cheapest extension you can find, you will probably regret it. I bought the cheap one, then ended up buying the better one (from CW) a few months later. Just my 2 cents.

I keep my 100 foot cord in a square milk crate. I fished about 3 feet of one end through a side bottom hole before I attached the female socket and then coiled the remainder inside the milk crate and attached the plug to the long end. That way what I don't need stays in the crate when I use it. The short end is tucked down the center of the coil when I put it away.
