How big of a generator will I need?

I have the Flagstaff HW27SC camper (30 amp) that has an Air Conditioner, refrigerator, microwave, lights, cd player, etc...and I am looking at a TROY-BILT 3550 Generator to take with me when we camp where there is no electric hook-up.

Does anyone know if the 3550 is enough to run it?

Yes, 3000 watts is sufficient but do your ears and everyone else in the wilderness a favor and purchase an inverter generator. The Troy-Bilt runs at 3600 rpm constantly and is VERY loud compared to an inverter generator. With the Troy, you won't be able to hear your CD player or TV.

I strongly recommend a Boliy inverter generator. I get mine from bottom line trading. The extra cost is worth it and it will last much longer. It is VERY quiet.

The one I found is new in the box - and offered to me by a friend for $125. I see they are new around $250-$275 - that's hard to pass up!!

yep, even if it's a good deal, it won't be worth it if you get in trouble using it in a campground.

that Troy Built is fine for boondocking, the desert or motor races but NOT for any campground where you have neighbors.

X 2 I also use the Boliy gen and is pretty quiet. also got from Bottom Line trading. It's light weight (75#) It will run everythin you have but not all at once. Later RJD

Yes enough for A/C, watch running microwave if A/C is on. I also agree with the noise. I found out most generators measure db at about 21 feet and Honda at about 9 feet.

Champion continues adding models to there Inverter line. Most recently they added a 3500watt model and a dual-fuel model. Last year they added an electric start model. All that said, it means that good deals can be found on the original 3100watt base model. You may find them used on Craigs List for about $400. New from Supergen and CampWorld you can find them on sale as cheap as $650.

That is the one I use and I run everything you have. The Champion 75531i currently is going for about $850 at SuperGen. The 3500 is $1200 and the Dual-Fuel is only at Costco for now at $1200

The base model is 58db loud (53db in econo mode) and only weighs 85# (so 1 man can pick it up).

Do some research...investigate more quiet options. You'll pay a bit more, but you'll have and keep friendly neighbors...

I just purchased the base model 3100 at Costco for $699.

I may have to return it for the Dual Fuel and remote start 3100 for $999.

I made the mistake of not buying the quiet generator, used the loud one once and after that trip, it looks good sitting in my garage.

I've been told the unit at Harbor Freight for $499 is very good with great reviews. It's a 2500 Peak / 2200 Running Watts 4.7 Hp 125cc Portable Inverter please give me any thoughts before I purchase.

Just because HB calls it an inverter generator, doesn't mean it's quiet.

What's its db rating?

Many of these cheap Chinese-made inverter generators are much louder than the more expensive ones. I've seen many that were as loud as an open-framed contractor generator.

My advice is to get two. A nice quiet one for when you have quiet neighbors and a really loud one for the neighbors how have a half million kids that they allow to scream at full throttle whenever in the campground, or the parents are drunk and loud.

But most FS or BLM campgrounds out west have no ordinances against so-called loud generators (too subjective), but between certain hours, such as 8PM to 8AM, NO generator can be used; regardless of how quiet they are.

If a Boliy or Champion are out of your price range, consider this one. I bought one 6 years ago from East Coast Wholesales and loved it. I regret selling it with the camper we had at the time. Only $499. East Coast Wholesales BTW, the 2700 watt rating isn't very accurate. It is more of a 2200 watt continuous model but then again I am at 6800 feet and the altitude accounts for a 19% loss in power output.

It may seem to be hard to pass up but you will be throwing away your $125 because you won't be able to use it in a campground. That generator has to run at a constant 3600 RPM to generate the electricity. It sounds like it is racing all the time without a muffler (my neighbor had one for a short time). Save your money until you can afford an "inverter generator". Yamaha and Honda made the best and quietest ones. The Chinese make most of the other brands and are about half the price but aren't as quiet or reliable. Parts and service may be a bit difficult too. I love our Yamaha 2000is but the Hondas are just as good in my opinion.
