HW296 Questions

I have a 2014 HW296 on order and I am trying to get everything ready for when it gets here. I was wondering if anyone knew how tall it is from the ground to the part that secures to the tow ball (I forgot what it was called) with the trailer being about level. This will help me get the right drop on my ball mount. Also, it is a 2-5/16 ball, right? Thanks a ton!!!

I have a HW 277 and its a 2" ball. As for the height, I want to say 16". I had to play the guess the drop game as it depends on your TV. My first TV had a soft rear suspension and dropped a few inches. My second was much less. I would buy a ball mount from lowes or Home Depot and return if its not right. I cheated and did it that way.

Unless they changed from 2013 to 2014, you should have a 2" ball. And don't believe what the dealer tells you....I asked them that very question before going to pick up the trailer and had to change the ball on the hitch to 2" after I arrived. The salesman had told me 2 5/16". As for the hitch height, I would have to measure, and I'm at work right now and the trailer is at home. I do know I didn't have to re-adjust it from my previous TT, so it is close to "standard height", if there is such a thing.

Thank you for your responses. I thought that 2-5/16 ball sounded odd. I called the dealer the other day and I think that they connected me to one of the shop guys. He said that it was a 2-5/16 ball and that even though a 1" ball hole would suffice he recommend a 1-1/4 inch ball hole. I am new to this but.... I am towing with a 2012 Honda Pilot (450/4500lbs weight max). I have a "cheap" Reese 2" drop with a 2" ball that holds 600/6000lbs which is way over what I am even allowed to tow. Most 1-1/4" sized ball holes are for over 10,000lbs. Not to mention that I do not have a lot of room to work with when it comes to on tongue weight and a monstrous overkill ball mount and ball would use up a significant amount of what weight I do have left. Anyway... I just want my trailer and to be out camping. The only thing that I am really worried about with the tent trailer is noise. Do you guys find being in rv parks, around generators, wind, etc... is noisy in the trailer? I bought an inverter generator so it should be somewhat quiet. Thanks again!

I actually with your same setup (almost). Was towing with 2011 pilot 4wd with two inch drop. With loaded trailer about 3600 lbs. my challenge was tongue weight because I had a single axle. Would keep around 400 lbs. any more had a lot of squat. What you can expect is to be pushed around by semi trucks and cross winds. Just find a speed you are comfortable with and let others go around. High altitudes will be difficult- 2nd gear at 4k to keep 45 mph.

Noise isn't really a problem in most campground because most people are doing the same as you. An invertor genny is perfect and quiet. 2000w?

I have never had an issue with the general noise you hear in a campground. BUT, when the wind picks up, it can flap the canvas a little, and rain can be pretty loud in the beds. But I guess that is all part of the camping experience.

I'm home now. I measured to the bottom of the ball, and it is 17". The trailer rides perfectly level, and I use a weight distributing hitch, so there is negligible drop. I would have measured the height of the coupler on the trailer, but it is set up and leveled in the yard on a slight slope, so the coupler height would be off.

I appreciate the information. I think that I am going to be good with just a 2" drop ball mount. All this talk is making me want that trailer even quicker!!!!!!!! It is coming from the factory but they are waiting for a couple of other trailers to get done so they can all come together and save on freight costs.
