Lubricating the winch cable

What is the best way to grease/lubricate the power winch cable? On a Flagstaff HW 27SC

When there is left over grease from filling up the lifting system.................I just take the excess and smear it over the cable as far as I can.

Spray it down with some of that chain lube for motorcycles. It'll soak into the strands of the cable whereas grease won't. I always used a spray cable lube that I picked up from a guy at work that did maintenance on cranes. Never found it retail though, but I've seen similar products online.
