Manual Roof-Lift for 2008 Forest River

I've got a newly purchased 2008 Flagstaff, Forest River pop-up, which has the convenient, battery powered roof-lift system. (Except when your mountain bike falls onto and breaks the switch, like it did yesterday!)

I have looked under, over, around and beside this camper and cannot find a manual-crank lift mechanism - nor is there any 'crank' in any of the storage compartments.

Does anyone know, would the manufacturer not provide a manual means to raising the roof on the camper? Or, am I missing something that may be right in front of my face?? Thanks for any insight!

I can't help you with the specifics with this, but will move the thread to the Popup section so more pup owners can see it and may be able to help you.

Good luck!

On my 2012 Flagstaff popup, there is a round disc that pops off of the powered lift system near the top of the box. From there, I am supposed to insert a crank device to manually lift/lower the top. It is a separate type of crank than the one to lift/lower the support brackets. Hope that helps. If you need more info, let me know.

Thanks so much, Summersby! I found the pop-out disc you mention(which I had found before but the hex-nut inside was covered up with grease and being the novice I am, well, nevermind..) Now all I need is the crank to use on it! LOL. Happy camping!

During my walk through, they said to keep that hole filled with grease, so keep that in mind if you plan to use the manual crank often. Good luck!

My manual crank ( 2012 228d ) was under one of the mattresses like the bunk bows and corner supports.

Hope this helps

If I remember right it will take a 1/2" socket. And it is real slow to work with the manual crank. Best thing is to find some way to use an electric drill. As for the switch it is a pretty easy job to replace.

You need the crank as stated or a socket to manually wind up/down. re grease that is supposed to be there. Repack with grease when you have finished with manual raising/lowering once you replace your broken switch.

I have a 2008 flagstaff hw27sc, but I could not find the manual lift. It is not at the powered lift system near the top of the box. My battery box sits on the powered lift system. I removed the battery, and check under it, but it is not there. where is it??????????????

On my 2020 2716g, you use the stabilizers crank on the emergency manual roof lift. My dealer told me it will take a lot of turns so you need some endurance! It is not the same type of crank system as on the manual systems.

There is a cap on the side of the lift cover, that's where you put your crank. At least on the 2020 power lift system.

This is a 10 year old thread that you resurrected. All that responded haven't posted here for 6-12 years.
You might try sending a PM to whoever you are asking, to see if they're still active.

Yeh, just realized I was responding to a 10 year old thread and then erased and quoted the last poster. Maybe would had been better posting as a new thread.

hi Mike, what size battery do you use? I tired 27 dc, but it is not strong enough to lift the top.

Should be strong enough, many people use group 24 batteries but I am using a group 27 battery and have had no issues. Even so, the current should be relatively low to raise the roof which most likely any RV/Marine battery should be able to do. This battery should have way more than enough current.

Your winch may have a bad motor then, after all the camper is 14 years old. If not, maybe your battery is bad. Have you tried another battery or tested yours at your handy O'Reilly Auto Parts Store??

Hello
First time posting. I have a 2008 flagstaff tent trailer and the lift system went out, any recommendations on which one to buy and replace it? Does most RV dealers install such items?
Thank you

That has to be the worst advice I have heard on these yet from a dealer yet.

That is like opening your car window and squirting grease in to lubricate your the seat rails.

The last thing you want is that "paper gasket" to be saturated with lubricant. That will wreck it. I supposed if I wanted to sell those and the repair work I would recommend shooting grease everywhere.
