Outside Table
On our last camping trip I learned a valuable lesson......the small outside table that mounts on the rail does not like being left outside during a torrental down pour. Once the rain stopped, I went out side and the particle board it uses had swelled up to about 3 times it's normal size. So after the normal mental ass kicking I gave myself......I decided to chuck the table and was going to buy another. About an hour later I went and dug it out of the trash and removed all of the hardware and decided I would build another. A few days later I thought about using a butcher block to make the table out of and came up with this.....

Looks great - a couple of good coats of marine varnish should protect it from most all elements and give you great service.

I'm using mineral oil to keep it sealed.......that should keep it weather resistant.

For those that may no know: Be sure u use food grade mineral oil.

Thanks everyone.........worked out well this weekend at Nautral Bridge Station.......needs some soft rubber on the support arm so that it doesn't mess with the decals on the camper side.

Yes, mineral oil would keep it "resistant" to water from normal indoor use, but I'm not sure I would trust just mineral oil for an exterior application, especially since you appear to have a face grain board and not end grain. I'd put it away when it rains. Just MHO.

I would be interested in seeing a pic of the underside to see what hardware you recycled from the old table. Your new table looks quite a bit bigger than my old table and I wonder if the recycled hardware will work.

It is just the 11" rail part and the fold down arm for support. I had to sandwich two 1/2" pieces of marine plywood to make a 1" thick piece. Diminsions were 11" x 7.25" for the piece that holds the hardware. The cutting board is wider than the table I got and an inch shorter.....14 x 22" is the cutting board.

Like your experience, the particle board on my table is falling apart.

Looks great and it's a cool idea. It appears to be made of hardwood. Most hardwoods can handle moisture from time to time. If you really want to put something on it, I would NOT use ordinary mineral oil, polyurethane, or any such coating. Use a butcher block oil, beeswax, etc. John Boos makes a bunch of such products. You can buy them online or at stores like Sur La Table.

Butcher block oil is MOSTLY mineral oil, with an additive of walnut oil or citrus oil to make it smell good. While I agree that beeswax will protect it somewhat, it won't protect your board from rain. Face grain boards can and will warp from continued exposure to moisture. Best scenario is to keep it stowed when not using it.

True......I would never leave it out it in the rain again.........but under the awning and being outdoors......mineral oil should surfice. I doubt I would even use it as a cutting board. Thanks for all of the nice replies and comments.
