My experience is just what a dealer told me. On my third (?) camping trip, a gear shattered (not sure which one) and the top came down. Took the dealer about four weeks to get it repaired cause they said they will only service the entire unit; not just a gear.
Now, this was a dealer and it was a shattered gear (per the dealer) so they might have been worried about gear particles in other areas. And it was a warranty issue.

Good luck

I have the newer winch. It decided to start by itself while the camper was in storage and tried to raise the roof while latched down. The latches won. The winch bent the mounting plate, destroyed the winch and broke the cable. I don't know why the breaker did not trip. No apparent reason for the winch to turn itself on.

I believe there was a recall on the older winches due to some type of gear issue.
