I had the Power Winch go out on my Rockwood HW296. I went to a local RV dealer and they ordered me a whole new Power Winch from Forest River. It was about $350. The part number is P55000.

I found that Tweetys.com sells a P30001 Power Winch for about $200. I contacted Carefree of Colorado and they say the P30001 part number is for a new install and the P55000 is for a 'warranty' type replacement. Aside from that they are identical.

Hope that helps.

P30001 vs. 55000

Does anyone know if the P30001 has been improved so that it is more reliable? I've ordered a new one, but have also wondered if I should have either just gone to a hand winch, or made my own electric winch out of a more reliable winch. Mine is on a 2006 HW, and has never worked right, so I just used a drill. The 7/16 bolt head sheared off so now I'm having to replace. Has anyone ever "repaired" one of these, and if so, where were parts available reasonably?

I replaced the original in August of 2011 and used it until February 2013 when my 2009 HW296 was damaged and totaled by the insurance company.

I was never able to find parts to repair one (except the fuse on the negative wire).

Thanks, huizarr. I'm guessing that since yours had to be replaced within 2 years of being new originally that I may have made a mistake ordering a complete new winch. I'm 71 years old and plenty capable of hand cranking one up, or engineering a better electric winch. Not sure I'm going to be happy with an electric winch always being the weak link in an otherwise good trailer, especially now that I know the 7/16' "backup" is so prone to shearing off.
