Receiver-hitch hookup on
has anyone ever added a receiver/hitch to the back of their pop-up? I've got a bike rack that attaches to a hitch/receiver that I'd like to attach to the bumper of the pop-up if it won't add too much weight to it. Only looking at adding a couple bikes.
Thanks

Brian, there are all sorts of threads pertaining to adding bikes to the back of a trailer.........most of them indicate it is not a good idea. The bumpers are not made for the weight, plus with lighter trailers such as pop-ups, it may take too much weight off of the trailer tongue.
Do a search FRF search on "bike racks" (top green bar). Some threads even have pictures of torn welds on bumpers.

I think the general consensus on the forum that the roof of an SUV or van, or the bed of a pickup is best way to carry bikes.

Hey Brian -- I have a Toyota Highlander and I can't use one of those hang off the back carriers (which is a bad design on Toyota's part, IMO...the small spoiler-like thing at the top of the back hatch door is decorative only and can't support weight), so I have this Curt carrier that clamps to the hitch draw bar. It's less than ideal in many ways, but for me it's the only way to carry bikes! (I don't have the skill necessary for a roof mount, nor do I have the strength needed to put bikes up there!)
Good luck!

Google Curt Dual Hitch Receiver, that is what I have for my bike rack, and with an extension you have the option of lowering the truck tail gate without interference. I also bought a 2 bike rack from Harbor Freight. You don't mention what you are using for a tow vehicle, so this may not work for you.

I think the best way is to put a rack on top of the popup. Not as high as a TV and won't add all the weight to the tongue.

If you are set on having a rear bike rack, then the best way is to install a hitch receiver to the frame of the pop up. You can either have one welded on or bolted on. They look just like the ones you would bolt to a vehicle. Check out etrailer for RV hitch receivers.
Forget about mounting anything to the thin metal rear bumper on your Pup. That will just not hold up to the stress forces of the bikes while your driving.
Vin.

where do you live? we have a hitch rack that we might be willing to part with... but if not close to Minnesota then shipping it would be expensive

Yeah. Shipping is always the killer when you try to buy things from fellow forum members.

Thanks for the thought. Unfortunately I'm in VA so shipping would probably be a bear. Thanks anyway.

Thanks everyone for the info. I've also found a couple things in here about what to do. Giving some thought to adding the trailer hitch with receiver to the rear bumper. Right now it's just my daughters bike so one ain't too much trouble yet. But as we get another bike or two that's when I'll really need it. First couple trips will be a learning experience to see what I need. Thanks everyone for your input.

Not the bumper. You want it bolted directly to the frame.

what kind of a tow vehicle are you using? Would a front receiver hitch be a option?

If your Jeep Wrangler is a hard top why not a roof mounted system?

You should be able to find a front receiver hitch for a Wrangler
