Had the same concern so I put a Key switch in to lock out power to wench when not in use and in storage. I got a lawnmower solenoid (The solenoid is used to handle the load) with three posts and a simple waterproof key switch for the install. “FIRST disconnect the battery” I first mounted the key switch next to the OEM up/down switch and then the solenoid located down below under wench cover noting the mounting hardware is the ground connection so clean all paint off the surface and a shot of dialectic grease between the mount and surface mounting it to. To wire…..I cut the red positive cable to the wench and installed the heavy duty eyelets on each end and attached those ends to the 2 BIG posts of the solenoid. Then using some 14 gage stranded wire I put a jumper from the small post of the solenoid to one side of the key switch and another from the Positive post of the battery to the open post on the switch. I did add a 10amp fuse link in this jumper. Hook up your battery undo roof latches and try the up/down switch and if the wench does not operate turn the switch and try again to lift and it should lift. The switch I got works as when in the on position the key will not come out of the lock and that is what I wanted. Last thing; label the ON/OFF position of the switch. Hope this helps.
