Safety Catches on Rockwood 2041?

Last weekend we camped up in Bluffton, IN. I cranked the top up and about 1/2 way let go of the crank and the top free spun back down. (The gear properly clicked as I cranked it up.) I did it again with the same result. The third time it stayed fully extended. I cranked it down with no problems and again back to the top without any problems. I talked to the person here in Kokomo, IN that works on RVs and he said that all "tent" campers have a safety pin or collar that is to be used so you don't have any surprises during the night. I went home and cranked it up again (without any problems) but I cannot find anywhere where you would place a safety pin or collar. Any thoughts...
