Sorry to hear you had tire issues. I hope it did not damage the trailer?
What was the brand and age of the tire?

I had a similar experience last October with a 1992 Coleman. I blew out a tire due to excessive heat. These were new tires, with a recently installed brake controller which I discovered later, I had set the gain too high, so between the 100 degree temperature, and a brake that was partially on, excessive heat caused the tire to failure!

It's 2 years old. 80lb pressure tire that came with camper. I'll look up brand tonight. Damaged drawer frames and fire extinguisher holder . It didn't break through the bottom though. Very strange.Click image for larger version

That looks a lot like my tire that blew out on Friday a few miles from the camp ground. I discovered my 4 year old tires were really 6 years old. I'm getting 4 "new" ones soon. I just hope this time I don't get ones that sat around for 2 years before I bought them. Thank goodness for the spare. Only a minor inconvenience.

The date is stamped on each tire. Don't take them if they aren't 'fresh'.

Date Code

I just installed tires on my trailer and made sure they were as new as could be. Don't take their word, I actually looked at the date code before they installed them. Luckily 2 months old.

Chinese bombs from the factory. Maxxis m8008 is the cure. I speak from the experience of owning two fthwheels w/ no blowouts while traveling nationwide.

80 psi tire on a pop up trailer? Doesn't sound right.

That is what I was thinking, my 13 inch wheels and tires call for max 65 lbs.

But different tires call for different pressures

Yes. 80 psi. Had to replace one when new, was going flat. Had a plug. Hmnn. Think from when it was being transported, must have been plugged. Dealer couldn't find a 80lb. Match
Now i have 2 different tires . Need you get 3 good tires. Any recommendations?. I'm planning on getting a Roo this winter, but need to be safe rest of summer.

The manufacture date is stamped on. It's in 4 digits, 2 for week of the year, and 2 for year. If manufactured first of this year it'd be 0116.

Thanks, I'll look into tires and will check for manufacturers date. Might be Chinese year.

Looks more like a Tread Separation (factory issue) than "Blowout from Run Low Flex failure (low inflation from leak) to me.

Remember if you don't know why the tire failed how will you know what to fix.
The fact that the tire plant building was painted green rather than blue seldom is the real reason for a failure.

Have you read THIS post on Why Tires Fail?

Thanks for the info. I'm am very good with always checking pressure and torque settings before driving. I was on the road for about 1 hour. I never heard a thing. I looked back and saw rubber flying everywhere. Tires were what came with the new trailer. This is beginning of 3rd season.

General replies to other comments.

This relates to true Run low Flex blowouts not Tread separations.
Checking tire pressure before a trip is like checking oil & water ion engine. I assume you have oil pressure gauge or low pressure warning light on instrument panel. Also Water temp gauge or light. Why do you have those and not TPMS for your tires? What makes you think you will never develop a puncture or valve core leak when driving. The fact that you can have a failure like that indicates you are only depending on passing motorist to warn you.

Tread separations do not happen overnight or even in a couple hundred miles. A "Free Spin" inspection as covered in my Blog will most likely allow you to find the problem before the tire comes apart and damages the RV.

RE "China Bombs" this is a simple term used by those that believe that because a tire plant is painted blue instead of green the tire will fail. With over half of the RVs on the road today having one or more tire in overload why are so many surprised that tires fail? Any margin built into the tire is taken up by the poor selection process (lowest cost , smallest size) of the RV company.

Based on some comments it is clear that few have bothered to try and learn about the special use of tires in RV service.

RV service is NOT the same as regular car service. Cars may have a load capacity margin of 20 to 30% with many RVs having less than 5% and that is assuming the owner has properly inflated the tires. Most ST type tires in service today have a MAX speed rating of 65mph. That's not average or occasionally but like the redline on engine RPKM means you are doing permanent damage every second you are exceeding the "redline".

As an owner of an RV you have a choice. You can wait and just complain about tire failures or you can educate yourself by reading some technical postings (not rants and complaints on RV forums) or attend seminar on tires.
