deaf dogs

Has anyone taken a totally deaf dog camping with them? The DH and I have a new Jack Russell and the vet said that he is 100% deaf. He has been a challenge to try to train, so far he can kennel up on hand command and knows a sign for no. He is a lover, but a challenge. Any suggestions on anything for our Sarge?

There are a ton of yahoo groups and Facebook pages or owners of deaf dogs. I have read about many deaf Australian shepherds (our breed of choice) due to poor breeding, and people make great progress.

The thing is, your dog does not know he is deaf, so he should respond quite well to training with hand signals. Hearing dogs can be trained that way, so yours should be no different.
Jack Russels are also quite intelligent, so that should also help.
Not to make light of it, but sometimes I wish our dog WAS deaf. We made the mistake of trying to stay in a motel a few weeks ago without taking her kennel, and with idiots stomping around above us in the middle of the night, and other such noises to set her off, we got almost no sleep, and had to cut our trip short!
Good luck with the new pup!

Our boxer is deaf now at 12 years old, but we've had him since birth. Fortunately for us, he is too old to do much, sleeps a lot and can't stand to be away from us! Lots of hand signals and an occasional chase to tap him to get his attention, otherwise he is great.
