If you get the metal grid for the bottom section of the door will give you something stronger to attach to and still retain air flow when the outer door is open.

I considered the metal, and may still go that way. I'm just not sure the metal will give me the height I want. Our little dog can be a real s#@thead jumping and pawing so I want to go up beyond the handle, and plexiglass will let me do that pretty simply. We have three MaxxAir fans in the ceiling so air flow is not an issue.
