Flora Problems with Dogs

We travel with Shi Tzu's and a Peek-a-Poo. All small dogs with long, fine hair. A lot of parks natural and man-planted vegatation has really messed up our dogs.

Grass burrs are at the top of my list. Then anything prickly or sticky. For instance, parked uner a lot of cedar and the fallen needles stopped one dog cold in only a few feet. All the Cedar needles got stuck up under her belly between the four legs. Took hours to get them all out and had to do some cutting. Same with old dried Pecan leaves.

Last week we stayed in the lower section of Bastrop State Park (TX). It was wonderful. All large pines with a blanket of long pine needles that did not get in the dogs' hair. Even if one or two did, they pulled right out. Was a relaxing stay. We moved on to Pecan River Park (or something like that) and it took hours to get the dried pecan leaves (and some grass burrs) out of thier hair.

Yeh, I know, why not shave the dogs. Well, we like them to look like the breed is suppose to and it costs us a fortune at groomers to keep them that way.

It would be nice if we could start a list of parks to avoid for the above reason or any other pet Un-friendly reasons.

Happy camping,

Have you considered some type of "dog clothing"? A small infant or toddler T-shirt nipped and tucked might protect their hair and save you a lot of time you could spend in a more enjoyable way. If you have a seamstress in the family a custom made pullover made from lightweight material wouldn't overheat them in warm weather and would offer quite a bit of protection. At least if the "foreign objects" stick to the material they would be much easier and quicker to remove.

I've got 2 short hair dogs, and they aren't a problem. The only thing I ever have to pull off them is woodticks. We always keep them leashed, and that helps.

My wife makes all kinds of clothes for the dogs, but usually only puts them on in the winter time. But I can see where they would help a lot. Only the lower legs and feet would be affected.

By the way, we just got back from Hunstsville state pare (TX) this afternoon and the dogs didn't get anything (other than a few leaves) in their hair. Only found one very small tick, and he looked like he was trying to get off. The flea and tick medications seem to work well.

Here in Texas the grass burrs are a big problem. My neighbor's dogs run around on three legs at a time to try to miss the burrs. . . .

Happy camping and take your pets along,

Happy camping and take your pets along,
They do that up here in the winter. Their poor little feets are freezing to the ground!
