Strange, how salmon oil is great for dogs, while raw salmon can be dangerous.
As for apples; my dogs love them; however, I do not give them the core, read years ago it was bad for animals, so I slice it up. Supposedly good for them too. But I know someone who has fed their dog a full apple almost everyday now for ten years.

Apple seeds are toxic to dogs and potatoes are not healthy for them. Also should avoid artificial sweeteners, onions, grapes, raisins.
Otherwise, my girls love all kinds of fruits/veggies: broccoli, spinach, tomato, sauerkraut in small amounts, watermelon, peaches, strawberries, carrots, eggs with shell, etc etc. Chicken wings raw occasionally to clean the teeth. Salmon oil added to food x 2 weekly. Raw salmon harbors a parasite which is killed with cooking, same for raw pork.

I've heard for years that grapes are bad for dogs, yet mine have been eating them off the vine for years.

Sounds like you have an exceptional dog:
Per WebMD:
Grape and raisin (dried grapes) toxicity is well documented in dogs. Although the exact substance that causes the toxic reaction is not yet known, dogs should not eat grapes and raisins because even small amounts can prove to be fatally toxic for a dog.
Dogs of any age, breed, or gender may be affected. Grapes and raisins are bad for dogs because one of the most serious complications of grape/raisin toxicity is acute (sudden) kidney failure with lack of urine production (anuria). However, kidney failure is not seen in all dogs after ingestion of grapes or raisins, and again, the reason why some dogs are affected excessively while others are not is still being studied.

I take you might be feeding him seedless grapes, I believe its the seeds that are toxic rather than grapes itself.

I read that the Animal Poison Control center did a study, found that 2/3 of dogs are not affected. And:It doesn’t matter whether the grapes were grown in your own garden or were commercially grown, nor whether they are seeded or seedless (grape seed extract actually seems to be perfectly safe for all dogs). So something inherent to the grape itself, and apparently to all types of grapes, seems to be the culprit, but beyond that, nobody knows (yet).

Talking about what is bad for dogs. If you are coming out west to the dry desert areas; watch out for Foxtail and Cheatgrass...can cause numerous problems.
(Can also cause problems for a human if they like walking around barefooted.)

And I am very allergic to poison ivy, that would sure ruin a trip quickly!
I stopped near a service station a few years ago on a long road trip so they could relieve themselves and they stepped in a fire ant nest. OMG... South Georgia. Ants got all in between their toes and they were biting at their feet. I watch very carefully where we go these days. I have stopped in areas where folks have left broken glass, old chicken bones, etc, so dangerous.

And the grazing, which invariably occurs when the grass gets too long. Dunno what it is about the lads munching the grass like sheep but round about 3 AM, give or take an hour, their digestive system expels that lawn salad like it had no business being there in the first place. Canine is known to eat grass when they're unwell but these are healthy, well-fed monster dogs!

Great thread. People should never feed their pets human food. They should only be fed food that is specifically produced for them. Anything else is just plain wrong.
Vin.

I have a chocolate lab that is in much better health than I am! She only weighs about 70 pounds. According to the vet she is VERY healthy. There isn't a night that goes by that she doesn't clean my plate for me. Of course there are some things she doesn't get such as chocolate.
I try not to spoil her too much. I only let her take a half hour nap in my lap at night. Any longer and my legs go to sleep, LOL!

Another thing my dog would kill for is ice cream!! Had to quit buying chocolate because of her. She likes vanilla and cherry but to be honest, if I eat it so will she! She gets it but only in moderation.
She will kill for cheese balls or Jacks. 3 or 4 for me, 1 or 2 for her. I also give her large beef bones from a butcher shop. I have to watch her with them though, she can break them. I can't break them with a hammer but she can with her teeth. She amazes me! Vet says I am doing something right, said to don't stop.

Eventually, the bones will wear down the lower front teeth. My two are 8 and 11 now and I had to stop those marrow bones. They do get an occasional raw chicken wing or two as it helps scrape tartar from the back teeth.
