I camp with 2 shelties. Too yappy and too much hair. IMHO a midsize, laid back, non aggressive breed or mix. Campgrounds are full of dogs yanking their owners around trying to get to other dogs. My strong recommendation is get a rescue from a shelter or a breed rescue. You don't need puppy messes and the rescues are so grateful and loving. Enjoy every minute with your new buddy.

We are boxer people and always camp with them. We currently have a 1 year old that came from a shelter. His first summer of camping went well and we're looking forward to the next. Our last boxer was deaf which was great. Nothing bothered him at all. I'm laughing at the recommendations for a short haired dog. Last winter in Florida we met Harry a wonderful Newfoundlander who travelled in a FR3. Everyone in the campground new Harry. Pick a breed you like and find their rescue organization or start visiting shelters. You'll know the one when he or she finds you.

we have a mini- Pekingese. she is a rescue puppy that we said that we would watch for a week and we still have her eight years later...

I tell the wife that the Pekingese is hers, but she sleeps either on my belly or with her paws wrapped around my head.

She is very small and fits in a small carrying case. We can and do take her everywhere. She never makes a noise and most people never know that we have a puppy in this carrying case. We take her to stores, shopping, and restaurants and she will sit (in the bag) under the table at my feet.

Very good attitude and loves to play and just sit in your lap and be petted (and kiss your face non stop) or to sleep. She will sit up in the dash of the truck for hundreds of miles looking out or looking in at everyone or sleep on the dash. She loves to camps and 'knows' that when her 'stuff' is loaded in the camper that we are going on a trip.

I would not hesitate to recommend a Mini-Pekingese and pray that we have our 'little girl' for many more years to come.

Dogs love camping, we take our lab Biscuit and a "morkie", Max. The lab is also a constant companion on hikes and hunts.

As for the Newfoundland....I grew up with them. They are great loving kind gentle dogs but they shed like you won't believe requiring daily brushing and drool even more. I did see a great Pyrenees on the front dashing a class A once. Another beautiful dog with lots of hair and drool. And in my experience short hair dogs she'd a lot too. The little ran hair matches our carpets better but that would never stop me from getting a black haired dog if it called my name.

Camp Buddy

American Akita has been ours for three years now. Loyal, quiet, and loves outdoors. Breed rescues are vetted, evaluated for social skills and usually know basic commands. Yes they are on most list, most often due to poor owners who lack understanding of the breed. Research your choice then choose wisely. She's the reason for our new 2704WS. We needed the wide slide and as part of the family, if she's not welcome, neither are we.

Baby is half lab, half pit and the best camping dog ever. She doesn't bark at everything that moves and is friendly to everyone. She was a stray that had no home so we gave her one. I don't know who was luckier her or us.

We camp with a dachshund and a chihuahua. They seldom bark when camping.

I said Malinois, half joke, half serious. Where do you live? I train dogs for a living. Let me put you in touch with someone that can get you a dog with the right temperament. It doesn't matter the breed...It does matter the dog. Look at all the previous post!

Our senior citizen dog, Golden Retriever, Sierra. She likes tennis balls, people, in that order
She isnt particularly interested in socializing with other dogs but tolerates them. She rarely barks, (squirrels) and though she sheds, it matches the carpet. I have an Electrolux stick vac and vacuum every other day or so, keep her groomed, always travel with her papers and she is chipped, god forbid we get separated. Crate-trained, although the crate doesn't travel with us. We also have to medicate for anxiety for the travel,,thunderstorms, hail storms, and fourth of July fireworks. She's on arthritis meds, and cataracts are making it dicey going in and out of the camper.

"Prince" enjoyed our camping trip last weekend.
I'm very glad we trained him as a therapy dog
as he does well around others &
was really relaxed as we walked around the sites.
