Thumbs up No more bugs in the dog food bowl

We don't have a pet deptartment on this forum so I'll just put this here:

It's not often I can recommend a product but every now and then one comes along that works and strikes the engineer part of me with its simple and eloquent design.

If you put a pet food bowl on the floor or ground then ants will be attracted to the food or at least the food residue. This is true indoors, outdoors and in the RV.

Enter this simple product, the "Fool-a-bug" bowl. Looks like an ordinary dog bowl until you turn it over. It has 4 little feet that elevate the edges of the bowl from the floor. The ants must now climb the legs, go upside down back down to the edge of the bowl, make a 180 turn around the lip of the edge and back up to the top of the bowl.

It short, this just overloads the ants navigation system. They just can't figure out how to get into the bowl. The bugs are kept out, no poisions, water moats, no maintainence, so sticky stuff.

I got mine at PetSmart. About $9. They come in sizes but all I've been able to find is 'large' which is OK for Dottie the Dalmatian.

Enjoy!

Neat item and I was amused by the way you described it. I'm considering buying one as we have had ant problems a few times when we have had the dog food outside. Getting ants out of a bowl of dog food can be rather tricky.

I agree, great stuff. And a "Pet" section has been created.

somehow I imagine ants would be more amused by it than confused, given their ability to get into anywhere they choose, but what the heck, might work!

I have noted two things:

For some wierd reason, Dottie the Dalmatian will turn her fool-a-bug food bowl upside down. She has a matching water bowl. Never a problem and never any bugs in her water. But about 2 times a week she flips her food bowl over. No idea why. Or how.

And the other day a sweet gum ball rolled over and touched the side of the bowl, defeating its magic ant confusing properties. (Making a bridge between the side of the bowl and the concrete) We feed Dottie outside in her pen.

But most of the time it works great!

Well, she can fart like a truck driver. Does that count?

If she did it in the bath, it would be a jacuzzi.

Two things we have found that work great for keeping bugs away from the dog dishes, for ants putting a chalk line around the bowls works great, for most other things including silver fish, earwigs, slugs etc. dish soap on the ground. Too keep mosquitoes off of your dogs, wipe them down with a Fleecy drier sheet, works great for people too, just stick a couple of drier sheets in your pockets.

We simply sit our pooches bowl inside another bowl that it fits in and seems to keep the bugs away so far. You have to have the right size and shape bowls to do this..
