Please beware! The little holes in your steps can cause a dog's nail to be ripped out. This happened to our dog yesterday. She was just walking down the steps & her nail got hung up in the hole & her entire nail was ripped out. Please beware

As we've been looking for what we want the one thing our dogs have never liked are the stairs. They really need to be wrapped with something the dogs feel comfortable walking on and is not too thick to effect their operation.

I am so glad I caught this post! I am "vacationing" a service dog next week and he is the type to not show any signs of distress. I just put in my Amazon Prime order for some Camco step covers. I know pet first aid as well as human first aid but would not have been on the look out for this type of injury.

After reading these posts, I received today from Amazon, Ruggids rv step rugs, UV protected, olefin carpet with solid rubber backing to avoid slipping. They had the best reviews. I have two Dobermans that go wherever I go and I cannot imagine what it would be like to treat pulled out toenail while away from home.

We carry a separate first aid kit in the RV for our dogs.

Three must haves:
Children's Benadryl for bee stings
And "blood stop" clotting powder or gel.
Vet Wrap (the same self cling bandage used when you have an IV)

Those ripped out toenails bleed a LOT.

If you don't have the clotting powder, pack the wound with flour and wrap it firmly with some "vet wrap".

We use the step covers that are outdoor carpet material with eyelets and long springs that wrap underneath to hold them in place.

Most of you probably know this, but Tylenol is a *huge* no-no for dogs.

Baby aspirin *only*, after checking with a vet for dosage.

If you give aspirin it should be the Bayer aspirin as they are not Able to digest the enteric (safety) coated kind. Also, flour can be used to help coagulate (clot/stop) the bleeding.

Late last season, one of our fur kids became reluctant to get up the steps. We though maybe he was having some visual/perception problems but it wasn't manifest anywhere else. He does agility and does so just fine. We think now that he was, from time to time, getting his nails caught in the step cutouts.

Fixed the steps. No more cutouts. The lad is quickly regaining his confidence in roaring up into the TT.

I purchased these step covers because my Chihuahuas were very reluctant to go up and down the stairs. Don't know if it is because of the material of the steps or because they are just not used to going up and down steps.
