This is the recommended practice. If your truck can not tow the camper at its maximum weight, either the camper you selected is too big or the truck you are planning to pull it with is too small.

Also remember for 5th wheels, 15-25% of the camper's total weight must ride IN the pickup's bed for stability. Make sure the truck has the avialable payload (after family, hitch, and truck gear) to carry that weight without exceeding ITS GVWR.

I totally agree... I should be using the trailers GVWR to match a 5th wheel to our truck.

But... you know how it is... you start looking at coaches and the ones you like weigh more than you expected.

I am using 1000 lbs as a cargo capacity to add to the actual dry weight and trying to stay under our trucks tow capacity of 12500.

2011 Ram 2500HD, CC, SB, AT, HO 6.7 CTD, 3.73 axle

It's difficult to choose the right rig when every dealer we meet tells us we have plenty of truck to tow these heavier trailers... and when I see so many similar trucks towing much larger trailers on the road.

I called my truck dealer about buying a new truck and even he said our truck is fine... we don't need new truck.

Your so called "dealer" has no idea what your remaining payload will be after your family, hitch, and gear are loaded into the truck. He is looking at a manual showing the towing capacity with the truck EMPTY and a 150 pound driver.

My GMC 2500HD with Duramax Diesel and Allison Transmission has a tow rating of 15,500 pounds (5th Wheel) and a max GVWR of 9300 pounds. My pin PAYLOAD is maxed out at 1500 pounds due to my family and what I carry in the truck. (10,000 pound 5th wheel max camper weight @ 15% pin load).

Respectfully... Regarding my dealer, you are making your own assumptions without knowing what I have discussed with my "so called dealer". He is a friend and a man I trust.

I would be more worried about your payload capacity. One of the reasons I shyed away from the Dodge 3/4 ton.

I know you already have the truck and have been told multiple times that it'll be ok. What I think it comes down to - you have the tools to make an educated decision. You can choose to stay fully within your limits or you can choose if you're going to exceed some or all of them. Many make choices that they're only going to adhere to specific weight limits (keeping within rear GAWR but exceeding GVWR or GCWR).

No foul intended.

Just that without actually weighing your truck "ready for camping with family on board" and determining your actual remaining payload, your good and trusted friend has no idea how much camper you can safely tow.
