Can get good deal on 2016 chevy 2500 hd gas and getting columbus 295rl soon. anyone pull one with a new 2500hd gas? the fifth wheel rating on the truck is 13000 lbs. the 295rl will weighs 10600 I would guess about 12000 with everything camping. Will be going long distances. Dont want a diesel but should I bite the bullet. thanks so much.

Buy a diesel and be done sorry[emoji6]
You will not enjoy the fuel mileage nor the constant shifting and high revving of a gasser and that weight.

12,000 ready to camp indicates you will be over payload considerably with a 3/4 ton truck.

I had a 2014 2500 gasser. Beautiful truck. Handled great. I'm only pulling about 7000lbs of bumper pull, and needed to keep in in 4th at about 2800-3000 rpm on the highway in the flats. I was getting 7.5-8 mpg. Which was ok and expected. It was surprisingly quiet and towed fine like that. Mind you, that was flat land and crosswinds. Throw in hills and strong headwinds, and I didn't enjoy it as much. Lots of revving and mileage dropped further. Throw altitude in the mix and results were down from there.

I'd just bite the bullet and get a diesel from the get go for that weight/surface area. You'll save money in the long run as eventually, at that wight, you'll end up with a diesel anyway after having thrown some $$ at the gasser by way of depreciation or trade.

Get the diesel now instead of later unless towing on flat land short distances.~~ or you will get it later.

I have a 2016 Chev 2500 HD gas and pull a 31' 5er- 9122# loaded with no problems and getting 9.4 to 9.7 miles /gal. But for the kind of pin weight your looking to put on the truck- I would definitely go with the diesel -- BUT 1 Ton--- a typical Chev. 2500 Diesel has anywhere from 350 to 400 LB less payload then the gas 2500. Always check Payload Spec on driver's door !

After loading our truck for camping and hitch I only had approx 2150# left for fifth wheel- (Actual pin # 1882) at 13000 lbs you'll have a minimum of 2600 of pin weight.

Step up to the diesel. I pull a 10000 lb 5er and just traveled from Oklahoma City to Virginia Beach on I 40, I 81 and I 64. I have a GMC 2500 Duramax. Even in the Tennessee Hills and Virginia hills and Appalachians, truck cruised in overdrive at 1500 RPM's and never down shifted except for some of the down sides of the hills. Love the exhaust brake. Almost never used the brake on the hills or mountain. Truck just cruised up one side and down the other side at a steady 65.

I've had both a duramax and I currently have a 2016 3/4 ton gas GMC that I bought when we went with a motorhome last year. I still tow a 3500# enclosed trailer and I miss the diesel tremendously when towing. I know the diesel is about $9000 more, but resale is higher also, so you do get some of that back.
I would say if you are towing more than once a year, get the diesel. Just an opinion from someone that tried to save the money and probably should have gone diesel again.

12k is diesel territory. At a minimum, SRW 1 ton.

Just a small point of contention. A new 3/4 T GMC/Silverado gaser is rated a just over 14,000# 5er towing. The rear tongue towing is maxed at 13,000#. As is the Duramax. 5er towing for the Duramax is much higher however.

Should have looked at the 6.4 hemi 410 hp 429 torque 3.73 gears. I had a 6.0 with 3.73 s the hemi is a much better vehicle. Gm puts 4.10 s in to compensate more fuel all the time. Ram has got some real great deals mine listed at 56 and change online price was 45 fully loaded Laramie also the gm is 360 hp 380 torque

That's impressive. I had a 2014 and could only average 7.5-8 mpg towing a 7000lbs loaded TT. Maybe the aerodynamics of a TT and 3.73 gears were a problem in my case, but nearly 10mpg in a gasser is impressive all the same.

Gas vs. diesel.....3/4 ton vs. 1ton.....Chevy, Ford, Dodge....this conversation is endless! It happens almost every day, and it is just opinions. Just do what is safe, and recommended by the mfg of the truck that you're interested in. Payload will be the determining factor in your choice....just sayin'!

My 6.4 hemi doesn't shift nearly as much as the 6.0 vortec, the 6.0 has no torque especially with 3.73s that's why gm uses 4.10 s standard rear in the new ones. I have 3.73s in mine cc no problem pulling anywhere, been out rt 78 Easton and west and zero complaints with power.

My 2016 2500 HD has a 4:10-- Love this truck- always had Ford's. But this a LT DBL and fits in my garage. Looked at the Ram 2500 HD Gas 6.4- just could not make myself like the looks of it. The hill climbing test (at high altitude) In a video I watched (under full load) the Chevrolet bested the Ford and Ram 2500's
oops I'll regret saying that !

Don't regret it. Saw several Ram commercials best the others as well. Ford may have a commercial as well showing it on top or just may figure it does not need to. After all, there are many reasons Ford outsells the others. LOL

I used to pull my 340RK with a 2500 HD Silverado gas for some months but was not fun, specially on the hills. I traded for a 3500 diesel. NP now.
