Hey all, wonder if any of you had this happen to you, I just recently checked the bearings/brakes on my 2012 Sabre 5th wheel for the first time mainly because my break controller was giving errors of current overload on the trailer brakes. When I took the first drum off I discovered the issue and that was there was no retaining clip on the brake magnet and it was constantly rubbing on the drum and the magnet was in bad shape and one wire was broken. After repairing the issue on the first wheel I did the 3 other wheels and guess what the retaining clip was missing on those as well, there were signs of some ware on the magnets but not bad enough to replace at this time. I called a couple of trailer/RV shops to get replacement clips and they were in some ways saying that the clips are not really necessary but from my point of view the clip keeps the brake magnet just off the brake drum not to wear it down during travel, before taking each brake drum off I would spin the wheel and could hear the rubbing of the brake magnet on the drum, after putting new clips on and doing a bearing service and adjusting the brakes all was good. Thought I would share what I found.

Look at why your controller is sending a electrical charge to the brakes that is engaging the magnets to the drums.
He said he found (and apparently fixed) a badly worn magnet and broken wire.
On a similar trac--- last fall I went thru brakes and bearings on my Rockwood Ultralite. I found medium wear on shoes and magnets but nothing far enough
to need replacement. I did some price checking just in case and found that if
I'd needed shoes and magnets I could buy a complete new brake assembly with back plate (minus drum) for about the same or even slightly less than shoes and magnets separately. If I'd needed them I would have gone with
complete assembly from either Ebay power seller or e-trailer.com
(Put on brand new Maxxis tires- new bearings - painted and computer balanced the wheels then took DW to RV show and traded it in!!! ARGH!!)

Thanks for all you comments, all good information, the over-current was caused by the broken wire touching the arm, I can see that the magnet may just lightly rub against the drum surface but that magnet I replaced certainly had significant wear on the leading edge of the surface, still think the clip could have helped reduced the wear IMHO.

Clips are for (Factory Assembly Assist) as per (Dexter Shop Supervisor) who repaired (Our Brakes) at the Goshen Frog Rally! Youroo!!
Youroo, how are you liking the new brakes that are more aggressive? THe new shoes will throw you threw the windshield. They put the brakes on mine last year and boy they will lock up if not set right. I'm not saying you didn't realize that or that you are an idiot. But they are just so much better.....Have your pretty wife wear her seat belt... I know Sid Brown said that after 4 years he can now lock them up. Now if he would keep from hitting curbs he should be alright..
