Columbus Dog Owners

I saw on a 340RK thread that some of you bought certain floor plans, like the 320RL or deleted the island on the 340RK because of your dogs. Can you shed a little light on this? Especially, deleting the island. Does it give you, or the dogs that much more room? We had a Weimaraner in our V-Lite, but we are looking at the 340RK and getting 2 dogs to share it with.

We have 1 large dog in our Columbus 295RL and it is no issue that I know of, my island is stationary because it has the sinks in it. Maybe someone else can shed a little light on the subject.

We've got a 320RS and travel with a dog - but...she's just a miniature Dachshund and doesn't take up much room. We've got a wire "crate" cage - probably 18" x 24" x 16" high that sits at the end of the island.

During the day when she's out and about, or evenings before bedtime - she's either in Mama's lap or laying across the back of the couch watching out the window or in her soft bed in front of the fireplace.

I have a 295RL and we take our 2 Labs with us. We have no space issues at all. The dogs have plenty of space to lay out on the floor and we walk around them.

We have 2 Chihuahuas and a Great Dane/Lab mix. We must say that there's lot's of room in our Columbus 295RL and they love all of the large widows... Lot's of places to look out! Only place that is tight is on the bed... we tend to get pushed out the sides. The Chihuahuas hard a hard time with the 3-step entry, but now that we have the new 4-step entry there's not a problem.

The only thing I can say is that I will be replacing the plastic curtain clips with aluminum or metal ones since our labs have snapped 2 of them in 1 day looking out the windows. (Cost to replace is $4-$7 each)

Like VenturaBill said, the dogs love all the windows to look out.

We have the 320 on order. I can't say we will make any changes with the island or anything else, but we did have to consider the layout when we made our decision. It was actually funny when we were at the RV shows and we were walking through the different 5th wheels. We would walk into one, see the lack of space in the living area and say no. The sales people would sometimes ask what was wrong and we would tell them it wouldn't fit our dogs. I think some of them thought we were crazy. But when you have two 100+ pound labs, you look at this stuff. Otherwise you may have a big dog in your lap!!!. If you're a dog lover, you change things for your dogs. It's a good thing!

We don't have this RV but did choose our MH for the layout because of the dogs! We were also asked why we didn't like some and also got the "are you kidding me" look when we told them we had to consider our 2 boxers and their comfort. Of course, their comfort is for our comfort because like your labs, they'd be in our laps if they weren't.

No insight here...Just want to say from the replies. Way too Cute!!! I did choose a little dog knowing we spend a great deal of time in our TT since we're seasonal. She's a 5 pounder, so plenty of room for her anywhere. LOL

I love dogs too.

One of the main reasons the wife and I upgraded was due to lack of room for our dogs and us in our TT. There was not enough room for our 2 labs to layout on the floor. In our 295RL there is plenty of room now and we can still walk around without tripping on them. So we totally relate to those of you that take in consideration your pets.

Thanks for all the replies. The wife and I thought we might be missing something. The open floor space should work well with our four legged friends.

With a 295RL on order, due for delivery next month, we are looking forward to the extra room for us and the dogs. What we've always done is set up foldable dog fencing and carpet to give us and the dogs a place to relax outside. With the door open the dogs can go in and out as they please, without being leashed.

Christopher Columbus,

The clip on the steps your talking about, whats the rating for the size of dog? I fear that if I attach just one of my 90 lbs labs to it, something is going to get bent if he decides to pull hard enough or gives it a good jolt.

Christopher Columbus,

What kinda of weight rating / dog size would be suggested not to exceed for the clip on the step?

I have a 340RK with an island. We travel with a 50 lb dog. We like it fine for space, and if we did allow our dog in the kitchen she could easily walk around the island to get there. The island serves as our dry goods pantry (I added shelving) and it also is nice for a buffet counter. I wouldn't trade the island for more dog space.

I asked the factory rep how do you secure the rolling island? He said with straps that attach to D-rings in the floor. Our 2 labs and a new camper will be challenging. The D-rings will make good harness attachment points. Asleep on the floor, a big bowl of water, and AC should work fine.
