Columbus Questions

We have been looking at the Columbus line for a new TT. Does the 4 inches of extra width affect anything? Towing, view in review mirrors, backing, etc. I wouldn't think it would be a problem with the exception of the view in my mirrors. I have 2008 Silverado with tow mirrors. They slide out far enough to see things just fine on a 96 inch trailer.

There is also a wireless backup camera option available. Any info on how well it does or does not work? Does it come with a display or do I need to provide one? Color or B&W?

Any comments on the heat heat pump option? Under normal circumstances, the AC is too loud, so I would imagine this option would be no different. Just trying to decide if it is worth the hassle.

4 way or 6 way Auto Leveling? We are looking at a either a 295Rl or a 340RK

I have a few more questions but want to see some answers to these first.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

My TT that I just traded in for a 295RL was 100" wide. I have a F350 with towing mirrors and I was able to see just fine even without extending my mirrors all the way out. When the mirrors were extended I definitely had a better view down the side of the trailer, but its really only 2" extra on each side of the truck. My experience towing a 100" trailer is that I could not tell the different between that and towing my friends 96" trailer.

The 6 way leveling is available for the 340, but not the 295.

An extra set is better for the longer trailers, but not available on the smaller ones.

We pull a 320RS with an F250 diesel - no problems with seeing around the trailer...I've heard that the heat pump doesn't work well for temperatures below about 30 degrees - but that's hearsay only.

We got the six-way levelers - and WOULD NOT TAKE FOR IT!!! Strongly recommend this option. We didn't get the backup camera.

My Columbus 320 RS is the first 5th wheel I have owned, so I can't compare it with a 96" wide. However, I installed a hardwired rear view camera on my trailer just to be able to see what was going on behind me. On straight roads I have to do a small, safe wiggle of my TV(2012 F-250) to get the trailer to move over so I can see what is behind me. That is fine for most folks and I could live without one, but I feel much better having a 9" color monitor showing what is coming up behind me. I have the 4 level jack system. Love the convenience of the auto system. The 6 level jack system may eleminate some of the trailer movement. However, I plan to install the steady safe stabilization system. Get a fair amount of shaking when walking and moving around. There again, it dosen't bother some folks. Don't know about the heat pump. I had one in a class A and it did o.k. A small electric heater works good and is a lot cheaper. We really like our Coulmbus and I feel sure you will as well.

The heat pump pretty much is useless below 40* or so. Same as home unit, not much latent heat in cold air.

Maybe I'm the only one that caught it or maybe I'm missing something. Are you looking for a new TT or a new 5er? Does Columbus make TT I haven't seen?

We are seriously considering a 340RK fifth wheel. We are trying to get information on some of the options available. The 340RK we looked at didn't have ALL the options, and the dealer did not seem to know much about the options I asked about above.

Is always found the options on the websites to be rather confusing. They're generally NOT model-specific.

To the previous poster, see if you can get a build sheet from the dealer (or contact the Wildcat rep). That'll have the options listed that you can have. Next, for anything not listed- it doesn't hurt to ask the rep directly. I've since learned I could have bad MORE!

No need to contact a Wildcat rep. About Columbus by Palamino
Just call the Columbus plant and ask for sales help. 574-821-1505.
I'm sorry that many dealer salespeople can't always have the answers. Maybe it's due to so many brands or they just don't do good follow up.
They know the factories can get them answers if they call.
I hope this helps
Chris

Heh. Whoops- that's the downside from using the FRF app on my phone. 1) typos and 2) I don't get to see the previous posts while I write.

Sorry!

I would order the heat pump system and the 6 way level system. I called lipperd for a price to install the leveling system after market. I was quoted $4800.00 and it would take them a day to do. I was thinking of getting it done when we attend the rally, but that's to rich for my blood. The 6 point is much better then the 4 point system. Also it now has to be done at the factory. A dealer can not do it.

Ah ok. Don't have the backup camera but would love to have one as my 320 is much longer than my old TT. Do love the 4 way auto level though and wouldn't do without it.

If you would want a Columbus order form, I could get one for you.

Maybe I will get the current one and scan it......

Some of the options, such as the wireless camera, I have not seen yet. Chris Columbus would have more insight in that. There are several models of wireless cameras, but they don't define which one FR is using, or what is included.

Lift system question

We are looking at the 295 and 320 and are concerned about the 4 point system on the smaller Columbus. Is the auto lift system a hydraulic system? Also, a Forest River factory rep suggested that a 4 point lift system could bend or cause problems compared to the stronger 6 point system. Anyone using the 4 point noticing anything that might be a problem?
Chris Columbus, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the use of the 4 point system on the 295.

I have the 295 with the auto leveling system. Its run by electric motor not hydraulic. The 6 point system is not available on the 295 but is on the other Columbus models. I have not had any issues with my 4 point leveling system and I pay attention to any bends, creaks, squeaks, and pinch points. I have not noticed anything with the 4 point leveling system that causes alarm.
