New to pulling a fifth wheel. Need some advice on hitch height. Just got new Columbus 320rs. Have a 2012 GMC 2500HD D/A with Superglide 18K hitch. Was told by dealer I needed 3" lift kit on hitch. Have 10 1/2 inch between fifth wheel and bed of truck. Camper is sitting about 5" high on front. Is anyone else using this hitch setup and how is yours sitting? I have 18 1/2 inch from floor of bed to top of hitch plate. Thanks for any and all help.
Have you checked the height of the FW overhang to the ground when level and compare that to the height of the truck's bed rails? You'll want 6" clearance above the bed rails. Remember that the truck's suspension will compress about 2" when the pin weight is added.
This will tell you if you can have a level camper and 6" clearance. Then you can figure out what the hitch plate height in the truck has to be.
Based on your numbers, you need to drop the hitch height 2 1/2" (only half of the 5" difference) to get the camper level. That should still give you 8" clearance between the truck and the overhang.
