JT Strongarm

I just bought the JT Strongarms and had them installed on my Columbus 2013 320RS fifthwheel. I took delivery of the Columbus Sep 2012. I bought the JT Strongarms from Camping World. Free delevery with Good Sams card. $281.99 plus tax (TN) ran me around $320.00 (online). I was having warranty work and had them shipped to the dealer. The dealer installed them for me and as worked out before only charged an hours work. My unit did not have the mounts already installed and the dealer had to install everything. The dealer stated it took him 6 hrs to install. I have read several post where the 2013 has the mounts pre-installed but mine did not. I have them installed on my front jacks (4 places) and my rear electric jacks (2 places)

Bottom line: they do make a big difference. Do they stop all movement? NO. I also use a tripod and wheel chocks that tighten down between the tires. Nothing will prevent all movement, however they are worth the money. They set up and tear down by a T-handle adjustment in less than a minute for the whole setup and are permanently attached to the unit and the jacks.

This was my first trip with them but I am very impressed so far. It looks like the only maint is to shoot some WD40 on the T handle threads every now and then.

Would I recomend them? Yes

What wheel chocks are you using between the tires?

I am using "X-Chock Tire Locking Chock" which I also bought from Camping World. 2 in a box for $99. I have seen them in use by several folks and they seem to be happy with them. I did not do any research on chocks. I just happened to be at the store and saw them. They are easy to install and remove. I have 2 slides so I make sure I install them before I slide the slides out and remove them once the slides are back in. This is for ease of installation and removal.

I'd be worried about putting that kind of lateral stress on the axels.

Don't think they put as much lateral stress on the axles as just going down the highway. All is does is stop the wheels from turning. Think of the stress put on the axles when you brake. Much more severe.

Maybe they were very careful. I kinda like my Winfield's, as you can adjust them by just turning the bars. Seems like that is better than just tightening a t handle or a big thumb screw. IMO.

Your statement is not accurate. When you brake, you are applying pressure on the drums, pulling them equally (top & bottom) towards the axle. This will cause a twisting stress around the axle's center. The system is designed for this. The X type chalks are forcing the wheels apart from each other, putting (potentially a good deal) of stress on components that were not designed for that type of stress. Whether the stress is significant or not is a different question.

The load on the drums is not an issue.

The load or stress during braking is to bend the spindle to the rear due to tire contact with the road and the forward motion (inertia) of the frame/trailer. The difference in the x chocks is the front tire is being pushed forward and the rear tire/spindle to the rear (the same direction as when braking). So the only difference is the forward load on the front spindle.

In reality, the tires deflect very easy, easily absorbing what little force is being exerted on the spindles from the x chocks. The load is insignificant.

I have the Columbus 325RL and the brackets were installed already. Literally took me 1/2 hour to install the JT Armstrong and they work great.
