LP gas alarm

Hello

If the LP gas alarm activates does it turn off any electrics. Our alarm activated and the freezer and fridge shut down. We were not in residence at the time. The microwave did not turn off. When we returned the alarm had re-activated itself but the fridge/freeze was off.

The “ chirping” noise may be an indication of a low or bad battery ! Can we assume you are plugged in, or on generator for the microwave to be on ?

We are plugged in but I believe the leisure battery is probably from 2009. I intend to get a new one this week. The LP was also off when the freezer stopped. We had to press the check button to rectify it, after I had turned the gas on. A number of different things happened so its difficult to put a finger on the exact cause. The LP alarm is being replaced tomorrow as its original and over the 5 year lifetime. I checked the battery and with the unit plugged in it was 12.14 volts. We are in Spain so it is very much do it yourself. American RV repaires not available in Spain. Its owners getting together and trying to sort it out. Spares from USA, Ebay or Amazon.
Everything is working at this time.

Thanks for you comments.

There are RV's where the LP alarm will shut off a solenoid that stops LP from flowing from the tank, but those are mostly on motorhomes with permanently installed tanks. A few high end fifth wheels may also have a solenoid tied into the alarm.

Unless you have a unit with the cutoff solenoid, the LP alarm is just an alarm and doesn't shut off any appliance. However, as said above, the alarm will also chirp due to a low battery voltage.

We are in Spain and I cannot find a LeisureLite battery that will fit the battery housing. The batteries are too big. The specified battery distributor is in Madrid a long way from base. The RV is permanently sited and has a 240V supply.
Can the RV unit run without a battery?
Can I use a car battery?

What are the issues?

All advice welcome.

In a pinch, a car battery will work, but the life of the battery will not last nor will it hold a charge for very long if you are disconnected from shore power. What make and model is your fridge? If it is an RV model, they require 12v to operate. Your battery is most likely toast and may have also fried your converter. If plugged into shore power, you should be getting 13-14 volts at your battery. You say you are plugged into 240v, are you 50 or 30 amp, and/or has your RV been adapted to 240v or do you step down the voltage to 120(30amp)?

Thanks for your reply. I have made room for a large leisure battery. I get the impression you know what you are talking about
Battery connected. 13.14 v
Battery unconnected 10.19 volts.

The freezer and fridge are Dometic.

Fry the converter. I do not like the sound of that.

The RV first came to the U.K and was partially converted to 240 V 50 amps. We get 240 v and 120 v. That is normal when conversion takes place.

Everything is working at this time.

Change the battery tomorrow.

Thanks again.

a deep cycle marine battery will work fine on your rig.

I bought a new leisure battery which was tested in the dealers at 12.75v
I installed it and we have currently 13.49 v sourced and 13.26 v unsourced.
It looks like the convertor was not fried I am pleased to say.

Currently everything is running as it should.

Thanks for all the advice.

Sounds like you resolved it. 10.19V unconnected is a dead battery.
