ManualOperation of Power Awning

I have a 2012 Palomino Sabre 32RCTS with a Dometic power awning (model 9100 I think). I don't have an instruction manual and am wondering what the knurled knobs on the rafters are for after the awning is extended. I think they are to pitch the awning if needed. Do these knobs need to be tightened (even if I don't pitch the awning) when extending or retracting it or are they to be loose? Also, what's the procedure to retract the awning in case of a power failure?

Ahhh, were is the pull strap that is supposedly provided. The pull strap is what you hold onto to slowly let the awning roll back up. Is the strap stored/hidden in the inside leading edge of the awning? Never looked for it myself obviously.

There are many ways to cobble one up if you need to.
Obviously having one designed to do the job is preferred.

Awning tapes and a string, if nothing else.

Way better than taking it off and storing it inside.
Make sure you have the tools to do that...

There is a humongous spring in there to unload the motor. If you remove the screws to change the motor and don't know what you are doing (or even that the spring is there) you can lose fingers.

I think there are a couple (not many) awning threads involving failures here.

I have the strap that came with the awning, but I also carry a spare motor & torsion spring I bought off ebay.

Think about your heavy garage door spring all wound up and tight!

Or as one member found out, not too long ago, it could break your thumb.

I was reading my awning manual eight months ago. I read the part “ you will have to use the strap provided to manually roll up the awning”. Looking thru my bag of manuals and goods, I did not find a strap. I called Dometic, and they sent me one at no charge.

But what if I had to roll it up 'cause I had no 12V power (damn battery thief!)?
Couldn't I remove the screw, deploy it using the strap, and reinstall the screw? If the awning didn't malfunction, why need a tech?

Thanks for the links turbo and herk. Now I understand how to roll it up manually and I'll have to pick up a strap at CW. But can anyone explain how to use the knobs that are on each rafter? Are they supposed to be tightened after deploying the awning and then loosened to retract it or do I just tighten them and roll the awning up or down?

Tightened after deployment.
Loosened before retracing.

Yes they are for dipping the awning for water run off.

They can remain tight at all times tho.

If you have poles to support the awning, (as a few of us do) I leave the knobs loose as they are not needed if the awning is tied down. The tie down straps and poles take all the load off the arms. As for someone stealing you battery(ies), all you have to do is plug in you tow vehicle to have power to the awning.

Good catch on missing battery/ies tow vehicle plug in recommendation!

When I picked up my new vcross a couple of weeks ago, the walkthru guy nonchalantly handed me this rolled up strap and said " it goes with the camper". Now I know what it does.
