standard definition DVD's (in other words, not blu-ray) come region specific. Europe, including the UK, is a specific region while North America is a different region.
Your DVD player is set to a specific region, it sounds like most likely North America. The DVD's you purchases in the UK or Europe are coded with that region, and never the two shall agree.
Your computer is able to read any region. Typically it will prompt you when a disc from another region is inserted.
Options include buying a region free DVD player that will read all DVD's, or buying a region free DVD (often pretty rare.) Or you can try to hook up your computer to your TV with either an AV converter or HDMI cable.
