Roll Around Kitchen Island
Well after one year the roll around kitchen island proved not to be very road worthy! Got back from 300 mile trip and apparently all the bouncing took a toll. The bottom has been broken and pushed up through to the inside. Anybody else have any such experience and how did you go about fixing it? We had very little weight in the island and it was secured between the 2 chairs. Perhaps it will need to be held down with a strap to keep it from jumping up and down.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks.....Heagle52

YES! I've had all kinds of problems with mine. I have never seen such shoddy construction techniques. The last time I dealt with it, I was so mad I almost put the whole thing in my fire pit and stood back with a cold one while it went up. But, the DW had to have it. It was a MUST have and we waited to make the purchase until the dealer had it "special" ordered from the factory before we went and picked up the rig.
From your description, ours are put together the same way. Why someone would put the casters on the bottom of the shelf is beyond me. Here is what I did, and after 3 trips (one this past weekend over 300 miles) it seems to be working well. I cut out 4 triangles of (about 5") pine board, removed the casters from the bottom of the island and stained the outside edges of the triangles to match the exterior of the island. Screwed the triangles to the bottom of the frame (not to the bottom of the shelf) and then reattached the casters to the bottom of the wood triangles. This did two things. 1st, it allowed all the weight of the island to sit on the casters vice the bottom shelf and 2nd, gave me the 5/8" increase in height that I needed to properly lock the casters. I will try and get you a pic when I get home. I could have just put a solid wood bottom on it and then attached the casters. But, I wanted to see if my triangles worked. After traveling on one of the roughest parts of I-95N and several things inside being tossed out of cabinets, the island held up perfectly and stayed in place with just the wheels locked. It took me about an hour to cut, attach and reattach, but I am glad I did it. Hope this helps.

Middle shelf reinforced from below. Amazing nothing was there to support the shelf.
Triangle attached to cabinet frame with caster attached to triangle.
What it looks like when I'm in the recliner.

You got me thinking. Looks like I'll be making a trip out to the Columbus this weekend and check the island out. I like the idea of fastening the casters to the frame, not the shelf.
Thanks

So did they put a shelf in the middle section? Ours is one big open space and I always said it needed another shelf there.

That is what I suggested so I guess they took my suggestions and I'm sure others also suggested this. Getting husband to put one in mine. Always thought that was wasted space.

To eisbell
Ours has a middle shelf but it too has fallen down. The small staples proved too small to hold up. Will have to upgrade middle shelf as well.

They are an option on the Sabre 32RCTS floor plan. Even though the dealer didn't order the island when he took delivery of my unit, I had him go back to the factory and have one made to match my unit before I would agree to pick up the 5'er. Cost an additional $300 but the wife had to have it.

Almost bought a TT with this option/problem, the wheel fix looks good but IMHO should not be necessary.

Agree it should not be necessary BUT this has been the worst of my issues with this Sabre, which is a lot less frustrating/easy fix than the many other problems folks have with their camper!

We had the same problem with ours and had the dealer fix the problem when we were having some other warranty work done. I really like the mod BombDoc did on his and may end up doing that to our cabinet to make sure we have no future problems. We also have a middle shelf but haven't had any problems with it. Definitely going to take a close look at that on our next trip to make sure it doesn't need more support.
Nice mod BombDoc!

I had the same problem with mine. I reinforced both the middle and bottom shelves with 1" x 1" stock from front to back using L-brackets with screws. I used three pieces for each shelf. The wheels were already mounted to the cabinet and not the shelf. Now I can put two cases of water on the bottom shelf along with 6-8 gallons of drinking water on the middle shelf with no problem.
