I hear you that they wouldn't have helped, but I'm surprised it didn't get pulled when the camper separated from the truck. What did you hook it to?
I connect mine with a lobster clasp/to a corner tie down in the rear of my truck.

Hooked on the hitch itself. Going to look for a different place now. It definitely caught my attention. If there was for some reason a hitch failure it's possible it wouldn't have worked.

The dealership told us to hook it to the hitch. I learned from o be of my camping forums that hooking it to the truck bed is safer in case of hitch failure. I now hook to the tie down loop that is low in my bed in the left rear corner of the truck. I'm guessing the brake cable wouldn't have helped here as it sounds like it didn't come unhitched until you started to roll over.

Wow, that first pic made me a little ill, I know it could easily be any of us in that spot. Glad you and your family are OK.
It does appear from that last pic that the head stayed with the kingpin but broke away from the base. I'm guessing those two hitch pins that secure the head to the base snapped?
X2 on brake cable attached to tie down in corner of bed, not that it would have helped much here. I say again, wow. I think I'm going to go make an offering to the RV gods, lest they become displeased with any of us again. Hope 2015 is better to you!

Just when I got the knot out of my stomach for our up coming trip. We're leaving Upper Michigan in January heading to Texas and this was my exact worry. Now it's BACK AGAIN.

It appears that they bent to the point that it let the hitch head come off of the base.

elind: If you don't wait too long, when you get to about mid-Wisconsin, you'll run out of snow. My in-laws are just south of Stevens Point and they have no snow. It's 40 degF here in Rockford. (Some friends are in Minocqua right now - pics show a couple feet of snow, though.)

Man JT, that sux. Glad you all are ok though!
We've been thru the totaled camper thing, just hail though, not a wreck, and luckily we came out ahead $ wise. But it was a huge headache and hastle.
Best of luck with all the insurance stuff!!
Man, and right after getting all that factory work done.....thats crazy!

still in pretty good shape, just tilted a little, make a good fixed location camper if you put it on the side of the hill.
I wonder what the ins co will do with it.

I wondered too as two of the slides still worked, fridge stayed close, etc etc. I'm sure it's totaled but could be a fixed unit quite easily, especially for an awesome hunting cabin

Glad everyone is OK, You should see if you could buy it back from insurance company for parts ( especially if you get same replacement) or as you said to make cabin.

Glad your all OK...we went through a similar event....totaled a C Class MH 15 years ago...that's when we switched to our first 5th wheel. Stuff can be replaced...lives can't.

??? Are you talking tire chains here?
Because Fifth wheel kingpin hitches dont require or use chains. Goosenecks do, but op obviously was using a 5th wheel hitch.
