Just close our eyes. Refrigerators have been running for many years on propane without any ill effects. It's not like there's a bonfire going in the back of them. I sure hope you don't have natural gas heat in your house.

Not worried at all. Grew up with a pilot burning in the stove and my hot water heater still has a pilot.

My paperwork on my fridge says its fine to leave on for traveling. It does caution the owner that the camper needs to be level when parked though. I can't remember off hand why though.

Mine is always on while traveling just for the purpose of keeping the fridge cold. I'm questioned all the time as well. Bottom line, it's your call.

Pulled from another site:
Quote:
The primary reason for leveling any modern RV is to enable the absorption refrigerator, specifically the low-temperature evaporator coils in the refrigerator, to function properly. Due to the dynamics of the RV absorption refrigerator, the evaporator coils inside the cooling unit must permit the gravity flow of liquid ammonia through a portion of the system. And as any RVer who can spell "RV" will know, liquids simply won't flow uphill. Without getting too steeped into the theory of absorption refrigeration, suffice it to say that it can indeed be costly if the refrigerator is operated off-level. True, newer cooling unit technology incorporated in today's RV refrigerator employs a more vertical approach to evaporator positioning, still the refrigerator must be "relatively" level for optimum operation. Fore and aft as well as side to side leveling remains a concern.

On the road propane
I have always used the propane for the fridge when on the road. 40 years and never any problems.
What i also have done is installed a small Halon extinguisher unit up behind the fridge just in case anything ever did happen. It has a head on it like a sprinkler system fire head with the glass in it and if there were a fire it would set it off and hopefully put out the fire. Recommended by an old fire investigator many years ago.

On. Won't be changing my behavior after all these years, I'm too old and grumpy.

For trips over 5 hours, I leave the LP on...under 5 hours, I turn it off and when we arrive 4+ hours later, everything in the refer/freezer is still cold...Just be sure the doors are closed tight while traveling. We have been doing this for 30 years and NEVER had a problem.

Always on - only way the fridge will keep things cool. Would really suck to get to camp and see the steaks had spoiled in the heat.
