If your campground water supply comes from a municipal system or a state/provincial park then you're probably OK with just the blue Camco torpedo, but it's no guarantee. Google "Walkerton tragedy".
If it comes from a private well you may be at a higher risk of poorer quality water if the well head isn't protected or if the system doesn't get enough usage.

Ok, the inner nerd is comming out in me today.
Some have asked about the gpm flow of the camco "blue bullet", and honestly I wondered too since I was going to delete my sabres filter when I get it, and I cant find a rating any where.....
...so I did my own test, got a gallon jug of water dumped it in a bucket and measured it, then took the bucket and filled it for exactly one minute with the filter and with out filter and took measurements within 1/8th inch. Now this was last seasons camco filter so, a new filter may flow a little better or worse.
Heres what I got.
-With filter attached it flowed 4.08 gal per minute.
- without filter I got a flow of 5.13 gal per minute.
Now this is on my home water faucet with a well that has a 60-40psi pressure switch and is pushing water 100' up hill. So not as much pressure as a cg faucet (untill you add a regulator).
For our water usage this filter has plenty of flow for us.

The "blue" inline camco is a 100 micron filter which is good only for sediments at best.
A good water filter starts at 5 micron.
Bacteria is 60 micron down to 0.3
Mold is 12 micron down to 3

I agree, there are better filters, some loose gpm with the finer filter. Unfortunately many dont say the gpm on the higher quality, better filtering filters

I've got a filter housing that holds the same filter that's factory installed and I'll do the same test with a 5 micron.
Tomorrow.....

Okay if I understand you correctly you tested the Camco Blue for those gpm correct. So what is the gpm on the filter that comes with the unit?
so you are saying with the filter attached you are only losing about a gal per minute using a filter. Which is really not that much in the big picture.

Ur a nerd too!
I seen some (in my 800+page rv accessories and parts catalog) that look like they would fit factory housing that went to .5, but I would think that may be a little restrictive? Iduno

What is your opinion on water softener systems for an RV? In conjunction with at least a two stage filtration system plus the water softening system.

I was thinking of adding the water softener myself. The water in Southern Ontario at most CG's we go too is very hard. At my seasonal site i double filter for iron 20 micron coarse and 5 micron fine. I wash the coarse off every time we go out. The 5 gets clogged quickly otherwise. We don't drink the water so not as concerned with taste or the chlorine.

I thought I'd have the camper out by now to test.
This weekend I should get a good test on the 5 micron.
