I have been staying out of the fray here, but I will have to agree with cyclepuck. I haven't actively fought fire for about 15 years, but our command would have had us pulling lines and getting up close and personal. I see a fireman on the front porch getting ready to enter the house with a pike pole.....he is a brave sole.

The trouble with this fire is the angle. You need to be above the fire fighting down, which the pumper is making a weak attempt from too far away, IMHO. From the ground, by the time you angle the nozzle so it goes up and then comes down on the fire, most of the water has evaporated from the heat. A couple of 2 1/2" lines from close up in the front yard may have been a better choice to get rid of some of the heat.

Hey Len, I know this is an old thread but I had to add my 2 cents. They had the right strategy of getting the water on the fire, however their tactic of doing so sucked. I have been a FF for 31 yrs and in a combination rural and urban fire dept. and I have seen similar scenarios. If that is Full time dept then they should be ashamed and take a serious look at their training program. But if it is vollie dept. they are sometimes made up of very young or very old members with only the minimal training due to money and time and if it is a small dept. they may only see 1 or 2 fires a year leaving them without any experience. Sometimes, they cannot get but 2 or 3 members to respond. I did not take your thread as bashing and as a FF I am not offended by any means as some seemed to be. I can say that attic fires SUCK. They run fast and can send stuff falling down without warning. The only thing worse than attic fires are basement fires. Good thing is no one was hurt, and buildings can be replaced.
