I'm not with them, but they sure do a lot of advertising on TV -so IMO,they're very successful at what they do or they aren't and need to get better.

If you read the membership #'s I would say they are very successful and have a very smart CEO.....I do not understand why I keep getting this censor thing I have to check when I comment?

many off-shoots of NG mag. Tons of stuff in the mail nearly every week.
I let it run out and sent them notice to take me OFF their mailing list.
Consumer Reports sent me 3 "IMPORTANT FINAL NOTICE" letters in a month. Trying to get me to re-subscribe but I'm ALREADY paid up till
2019!! Sheesh....
I'm sure AARP will be just as bad as NG was.....

X2....I receive 3 copies of their AARP magazine every issue because my wife and I are members. I have tried and tried to get them to send just one to no avail. We are constantly bombarded with offers for life insurance, long term care insurance, etc., from them. I too like the discount when no others are accepted. That's why we keep the membership. If you understand that then no problem. I just stand by the trash can and dump everything I am not interested in that comes from them and life goes on.

I did the same thing with AARP as I did with other organizations like the NRA when I was being overwhelmed by unwanted mailings....I went to the site and looked for the opt out of mailings information....
Here are their instructions

- Call us at 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-687-2277)

Thanks for the information. I will do it just as soon as I hang up from typing this.

I just downloaded AARP's opt out page and filled it out. They "thanked me" and noted it takes 12 weeks for it to become effective. I read some posts on that website and most folks weren't happy about that length of time and wondered why it wasn't immediate in this computer age. One noted that their opt out page loaded 37 tracking cookies on their computer when they downloaded it. Just in case I ran my cleaner to delete those cookies. Thanks again Hudlow for the info.

Because when this thread began post #2 was already heading off the
road into political comments which are verboten due to the heat they
almost always generate.
One of the moderators tagged the thread a "hot topic" so everyone,
including all other moderators has to agree they know the rules before
posting to this thread.
It's a bit of a PIA but without it this thread would likely have been locked
hours ago and I for one wanted the discussion to continue as I am interested in both
sides of why or why not I might want to join AARP.

FWIW - I did the opt out thing with Charter Cable via email and it still keeps coming - been about 2 months IIRC.

The reason I got out of the NRA was because I tired of the "emergency money" calls. I will eventually join the AARP...prolly as soon as the "old age catogory" soaks in a little more. Dang I'm old. I guess if I go in knowing to block all crap..then I will be ok.

It is difficult to avoid making political statements about an entity whose stated purpose is to politically represent a certain segment of the US population (i.e. lobbying).
It is also difficult to say "no" without some kind of explanation. In this case, a divergence with a publically stated political position.
Apparently no members have issue with their insurance program (other than high rates), or their magazine. So political performance is definitely on the table as an issue to influence whether people should join or not.

Very well said - however you can get a reply blocked even if it doesn't get political.

We didn't and wouldn't join regardless of the discounts just because of AARP's policies.

Same here for the Hartford, have had several other companies give me quotes on my auto coverage over the years and no one has come close. Politics is a different story but money talks

Just by joining, you fund their policies. IMO, discounts are just not worth it.

OK, why is the warning gone now, the one you have to acknowledge before you post to the thread?
