Yes and those engines were used to assist takeoff. I believe they were shut down after successful rotation and not used as a primary thrust additive except perhaps over a target. Could be wrong.

If you're talking about what civil aircraft might have used JATO,I'm still thinking that airplane was the Swearingen equipped with the Garrett engines. The airplane was known to be underpowered.
I never was around the airplane, but perhaps some one else can help here.

I don't have a B-36 Flight Manual, but I have read that the jets could and were used inflight as the need arose.
But I think you are correct in saying their primary use was to provide takeoff assistant for the big bomber.
With the addition of the 4 jets, the B-36 had a total of 10 engines.

maybe not in their current but everyone starts small.. the worst I have ever had was IMC out of louisville, 2am, engine failure 10miles from the airport and have to get back it line with out causing a mess, controllers hated me that night and so did fedX since it has to get their now it was not getting their now

So were you flying as a FedEx contractor?
Disappointed to hear that the controllers "hated" you that night - I'm assuming you are saying that because your engine failure caused them extra work - that's their job and you probably caused them to miss some sleep - sad.

I can only guess that the IFR transponder had been tuned to the wrong coords (you can hear on the recorded conversations the crew wanting verification of the coords after landing)...OOPS
Update: A "Fresh Crew" successfully launched the Dreamlifter off the runway and flew it to the correct destination....
Probably sucks to be the AC that landed at the wrong airstrip

our company flys contract for UPS, FEDx, British airways, DHL, and some others. if you have ever been into memphis, or louisville around 12am to 3am it is a mess, planes stacked for 90 miles out, and 40 deep to takeoff when someone has a issue that necssitate a turnaround it puts everyone into a tissy...including the crews setting up approaches, and the ones that are 150miles out

You say the operations at KMEM and KSDF are a "mess" and probably to some outside observers they are, but in reality they are a very well run operation.
For all those airplanes to fly into those airports, be unloaded, get the packages sorted, be reloaded and then flown out each night is a sight to see.
Even when an airplane is out for a mechanical problem, they have procedures for that,including spare aircraft spotted around their systems.
Nothing like seeing an UPS DC-8 still flying.

Back in my younger years, when I camped at race tracks, I was so hammered and walked into the wrong camper. I was wondering why my bed was occupied. Is that similar to landing at the wrong airport? Maybe the pilots were having a few?

We got back from one of the boardwalk rides at the Jersey shore last year late and my daughter slept in the car on the way home. As we were unloading my baby son and getting crap out of the trunk my daughter walked herself to the camper.
We found her outside the neighbor's door waiting for us to come unlock it!

Herk - I'm not that familiar with the C-130 and all their models and variants (too many for me), but the 3 aircraft named here, 74-1683, 74-1686 and 74-2065 seem to be older aircraft than the one that is in your User ID (7769). I don't know if 7769 is in contract number 1974, thus 74-7769.
Am I correct here?
P.S. Please note that the term "Tail Numbers" is only used in this P.S.and not in the main message due to one FRF members fascination with the term.
