Remember seeing some hot shot pilot jettison a center fuel pod off an f15 at kadena when those planes first started showing up. Made a lot of noise and smoke. An equal amount from the pilots commander too I'm sure. Rumor was it was the wing commander that had his oops moment.

I have seen what a C-130 does to a ramp not stressed to that level.
It rolled the asphalt up like a strip of lawn sod.

Tried to find a photo, but you can see from these road and runway photos, municipal airport runways are no where near as thick (nor supported by many feet of concrete) as larger airports with runways built for aircraft weighting over 100,000 pounds.

The very first FEDX plan that was used for air delivery is on display at Smithsonian's Nation Air And Space Museum at the Steven F. Hazy Center in Chantilly VA at the South end of the main hanger. For those that don,t know where this Museum is located it is on Dulles Airport property. This is where the Space Shuttle Discovery is and this Museum is larger then the one in DC.
A great place to go and a lot of history to see.

True - I don't ever think about runway/ramp strength when talking about aircraft - just assume that part of aviation is taken care of.

I read an article about the time the Strategic Air Command (SAC) was expanding the number of their bases and the merits of concrete vs. Asphalt runways was a highly discussed subject. They ended up with concrete for their runways.

When the old KCMO airport was being evaluated for upgrades for 707 service they found there was finally a reason to be pleased with former corrupt practices of a mayor. The runways were plenty thick enough, only needed to be extended.
I remember one runway near Lancaster, OH that was/is several hundred feet shorter in one landing direction that the other...
thinner on that end.

is it a F20?? we have 9 of them with the avcon door designed just for Fedx, then they went with the avtek door which we have 4

just looked and yes a F20 with cf700`s and the avcon door, no wonder they upgraded ours have the honeywell 731 engines on most , but we also run the 700. Our 727`s came right off fedx`s line built at boeing for fedx, ser#`s are sequential, they are nice and never been a passenger hauler
