Since they have more time (being retired and aren't just weekenders), then they can spend more money at the parks that offer camping and will be at the parks during the week and other off peak times, as compared to the younger generation, who have to get back to work on Monday.
I think that fact has been ignored in this, and to which the seniors contribute to the park and local economy with all their camping/spending. If the parks offer them discounts to get them to come, but they end up making more money from them, due to how long they stay and other things they buy...as opposed to a younger family only staying a few days..... then it makes a LOT of sense economically to offer discounts to entice them to come....since this demographic could go elsewhere.

the counter argument is that in many of the crowded parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite etc, that the discounted Seniors actually cost the park money as they would receive non discounted fees for those visitors.
Ie, the campsite is sold for $10 to a senior but would in fact be possible to be filled by someone paying the $20 rate a night
just a thought

I don't think it's criticism as much as it is disagreement. I disagree with her but she has the right to voice her opinion. I won't change my stand about this because then we both would be wrong.

There are also campgrounds with monthly rates....why would they rent a $20 daily site for $200 a month....cause the retired folks camp year round .....better than not talk'n in a dime during the week...just an example of how to get people there...

Thanks for the heads up folks! Heading to pick up my Senior Pass this weekend for sure before the $80 fee sets in.
That said, at $10/lifetime, $80/lifetime, or $10/year our National Parks are to be cherished and utilized...count me in...

I bet she'd mess her Birkenstocks if she found out nobody pays to get into the Smoky Mountain National Park. She wouldn't know who to be upset with and place blame on.
I can see her now, running away to her "safe space" having a fit.

I got mine this summer, and it makes me think about getting to more parks and trying out things I might not have otherwise. The way I look at it, it might be one of the few perks I can enjoy after working so hard. It's wonderful if seniors can get out and enjoy the National Parks.

You dang right I criticize her did she serve our country. Heck no if it was not for us vets you folks would not be here traveling all over this great nation of ours. If the you know who would be given the money to maintain the parks as they should we would not have a financial problem with parks. Later RJD

I don't think she ever questioned anyone's military service and their right to a lifetime pass. I believe she is questioning those of us who have not served. Do we deserve the same benefit merely because we worked in the private sector or reached a certain age? This may make me unpopular, but I stand behind the logic, much the same as one can get a senior discount at many things.

To me the travesty is that our Government does not fully fund these National Treasurers. Take the $$ we give to several not-so-friendly nations a FUND our PARKS!!!
