The best deal is to retire and go back as a contractor making much more than you did when you were a direct employee. When my former employer asked me to help out on a short (2 month) job, I named a price 50% more than I was making before I retired. They agreed. It's not as outlandish as it sounds. Their cost for me to work as a temporary employee did not include allowances for vacation, sick time, holidays, insurance, or retirement matching (which wasn't much).
They called again this past winter, but the 2 to 3 month job wasn't going to start until a few weeks before we were planning to leave for a 2 month trip. There were specific places where we wanted to be at specific times. I told them, "Sorry but traveling comes first. Call again later".
